SANTA FE, N.M. — Dorothy Eugenie Brett’s (1883-1977) “Indian Women Watching Horse Race,” 1927, was the notable lot on the third session of Santa Fe Art Auction’s Signature Annual art sale, the second highest selling work and it landed at more than twice the high estimate, selling for $43,050 including buyer’s premium. The oil on board was inscribed verso “Taos New Mexico / Brett / 1927” and measured 17-5/8 by 21-3/8 inches (less frame). Provenance listed Robert L. Parsons Fine Art, New Mexico, and the Gregory Warren Nelson collection, New Mexico. Catalog notes explained that Brett painted this scene while living at the D.H. Lawrence Ranch in 1927. The scene typifies the communal life and ceremonial events of the Native people, who prized horse races for entertainment and spiritual vibrancy. Santa Fe Art Auction reported it had a full house of floor bidders and robust online activity for the sale, which came in at just under $2.5 million. A more expansive wrap-up will follow.
