WILLOUGHBY, OHIO — Among the many offerings in Fusco Auctions’ fine and decorative art sale on October 4, a bronze by French sculptor Camille Claudel depicting a pensive woman seated before a fireplace, was bid to $54,000, inclusive of buyer’s premium. The base of the bronze measures 11¾ by 9¾ inches and it stands 9 inches tall. It is marked “Rêve au coin du feu / Fireside Dream / 1898–1903, #23.” Claudel (1864-1943), the subject of two films and a musical, led a tempestuous life, including a notorious romantic association with Auguste Rodin after being employed in his workshop beginning in 1884. A source of inspiration, his model, his confidante and lover, Claudel ended the affair in 1882. Diagnosed as a schizophrenic in 1913, she was confined for 30 years in a mental asylum where she died in 1943.
