Duke Armchair Brings 144,000 At White Auction

The chair on the left was made for the Duke of Marlborough and sold for $144,000. The example on the right was a purposeful copy and brought $480.

A George II mahogany armchair came to auction at Gustave J.S. White Company’s March 14 auction at Newport County Auction Gallery, where it sold for $144,000. The chair, made by Thomas Chippendale for the Duke of Marlborough, came from the Newport estate of Jane (Pope) Akers Ridgway, sold to dealer Chris Jussel.
