NEW YORK CITY — Freeman’s | Hindman’s first furniture sale at its new New York City gallery featured 28 lots from the collection of Bessie and E. Ross Millhiser, who, working in the 1930s and 40s with such notable dealers as Israel Sack, Joseph Kindig and Ginsburg & Levy, assembled a stellar collection of Queen Anne and Chippendale furniture from Philadelphia, Newport, Boston and the South. Presented January 27 and on-view during Americana Week, the auction was led by a set of six Queen Anne compass-seat side chairs from Boston that had provenance to Philip Flayderman, Israel Sack and the Eddy family of Warren, R.I., and which had been featured in six publications and is included in the Rhode Island Furniture Archives at Yale University. A trade buyer won the set, which had been estimated at $50/100,000, for $64,000, including the buyer’s premium. More highlights from this sale will be featured in an upcoming issue.
