MARLBOROUGH, MASS. — The sale of Ellie Hoover Walker’s personal collection of painted furniture, fraktur, spatterware and early American furniture brought big-name dealers to Skinner August 9 and with active phone and Internet bidding, results were predictably strong.
Topping Hoover’s collection, as well as the entire sale, was a Bucks County dower chest she had purchased at Ginsberg and Levy decades ago. It sold to Pat Bell of Olde Hope Antiques, bidding for a client, at $159,000, including the buyer’s premium. A Maine painted stand that once sold for $17 went out at more than $100,000 and a large, virtually unknown collection of Sandwich glass demonstrated that the glass market is alive and well.
A complete report on the auction will appear in a future edition.
