Recently discovered on the property of a home in New Hampshire, by the eBay sellers Wwolst12, comes a one of a kind piece of American Maritime Folk Art; an 8 foot long, hand-carved wood Mermaid named “Dendrite.” This beautiful, unique and impressive carved figure is a true example of an artist’s vision coming to life. Everett Wykes (1917–1997) of Greenland, New Hampshire, drove past the Pease Air Force Base every Sunday for 11 years, & on the property grew a curved & twisted Black Birch Tree. Although he was a seaman by trade, Everett had the heart of an artist & he could not drive past the tree without envisioning a Mermaid that needed to be freed from within it its trunk. After several attempts of pleading, Mr. Wykes was finally granted a permit from the Government to dig up & remove the tree in April of 1978. After three years, & countless hours of carving, Dendrite the Mermaid was brought to life in 1982. From the abandoned Shattuck Ship Yard in Newington, on the Great Bay, Wykes retrieved a large relic of wood used in the construction of, ‘The Newington’ one of the last ships built by the shipyard during WWI. After carving the wooden fragment to perfectly fit Dendrite’s body, Wykes attempted to sell the carving & base for $100,000. This sale never happened & in time, both Everett & his wife, Priscilla passed on. Dendrite remained, untouched & unseen, in the shed on their property for almost 40 years. She collected layers & layers of dust, dirt & grime & never saw the light of day, or any appreciation, until just recently!
Dendrite the Mermaid has now been re-located, she has been cleaned, & she is ready to find a new forever home! Along with her comes the original base, a 6-page letter directly from the artist, an original 8×10 photograph & a 1983 Portsmouth NH Magazine article featuring the carving & artist!
Packing and shipping this carving is not possible, but the high bidder does have some options. Dendrite will be available for pick-up in Cumberland RI, or a delivery may be able to be arranged between New Hampshire and Maryland. Finally, a blanket-wrap trucking company is available for delivery through most of the continental United States. Details on each of these options can be provided upon request!
