A special auction featuring a rare, distinctive collection of antique science equipment, with many items dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
This auction will present a unique group of late 19th-century and early 20th-century laboratory & scientific equipment recently deaccessioned from the collection of the Physics Department of a private college. Items to be auctioned include instruments such as circuits, electrical cells, electromagnets, galvanometers, voltmeters, inductors, telegraphs and telegraphy teaching tools, and other apparatus used in the college’s academic physics, optics, astronomy, and acoustics laboratories.
Many of these instruments were made by the top scientific equipment and laboratory manufacturers of their era, including Max Kohl AG (Chemnitz), William Young & Co. (Philadelphia, PA), Milvay Scientific Equipment Apparatus Co., N.H. Edgerton Co., Central Scientific Co. (Cenco), J.H. Bunnell & Co., Nalder Brothers (London), L.E. Knott Scientific Apparatus, and Charles Beseler.
These scientific instruments have been in secure storage for decades; this is the first time they have been made available to collectors. Many of the devices are constructed of brass and include wooden bases or finger-jointed wooden cases. They offer a fascinating snapshot of scientific investigation and innovation at the turn of the century on the U.S. East Coast. The meticulous craftsmanship makes these pieces valuable works of art as well as important historical scientific devices. This valuable auction will also feature hundreds of historical photographic slides (including glass slides) dating from the early to mid 1900s, including scientific subjects (e.g., astronomy, microbiology, geology, chemistry, physics, etc.), personal photographs, pictures of local interest, and landscape photographs.
