The Collection of Walter E. Maimer (1933-2018)
Wide selection of Repousse & Sterling Silver
Walter Maimer (1933-2018) grabbed life, and art, with both hands. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, he studied architecture at Kent State University where he bought his first piece of original art in the early 1950s. While developing his business as a homebuilder and architect, collecting art became his hobby and passion, shared with his wife, Sally Maimer. Throughout his life, he visited thousands of galleries and museums, and planned his vacations around art festivals and museum exhibitions across the U.S. and as far away as Barcelona, Spain and Athens, Greece.
He relished throwing cocktail parties to share his collection, which was displayed salon-style in his
Frankfort, Kentucky home. His extensive, eclectic collection included oils, watercolors, bronzes, ceramics, glass, photographs, textiles, wood carvings, mixed media, crafts, and Mid-Century Modern furniture. The latter included pieces by many of the giants of Mid-Century Modern design:
Charles and Ray Eames, Mies Van der Rohe, Harry Bertoia, and Eero Saarinen.
He believed strongly in fostering the careers of young artists and purchased many
pieces from novices, including students and faculty at the University of Kentucky, Morehead State, and Berea College. He maintained lifelong friendships with several Kentucky artists, including Robert James Foose, Keith Spears, Jr., Neil de Teresa, John Tuska, Jim Cantrell and Ellen Glasgow. He also passed along his love of art to his three children, who continue his legacy.
