GEN. WILLIAM T. SHERMAN SILVER PRESENTATION PIECE
An Impressive Silver Presentation Covered Cup. A gift from Emperor of Mexico Maximilion I (1832-1867) to General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891).
Cover is hand-chased with repeating floras and finial with a sculpted infant holding a snake. Font with semi-sphere drop is applied with bead-work and swags of flowers centering a shield inlaid “Gl Sherman” and (3) stars. Scrolled tripod legs support font with (3) scallop shells and rest on a base of complementary chase work and beads.
Engraved in cursive under base in French “Memoria de Gratitud – Un Mexicano”. Postbellum. circa 1866-1867. Stamped A. HERRERA and CAMACHO on base, font and cover. 75.00 troy ounces (over 4 pounds).
Provenance: Consigned by a direct lineal descendant of William T. Sherman.
Note: Sherman was sent to Vera Cruz at the behest of President Johnson to ensure that Maximilian I together with 28,000 French troops were to indeed exodus Mexico as laid out in an agreement between the United States and France in 1866. This presentation cup was (by family tradition) given to Sherman as a gift from Maximilian having been invited by Marshal Bazaine with a courteous and pressing invitation to come up to Mexico City.
