Unseen by outsiders and virtually unknown to the art world for more than 150 years, a large oil on canvas by German American artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (1816-1868) only came to auction earlier this year for the first time since it was created in the 1840’s by the artist best known for his work, Washington Crossing the Delaware, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 1850, the painting depicting the biblical subject of Marshaling the Hosts, was received from the artist by Samuel Wetherill, who became the first Worshipful Master of the Bethlehem Lodge 283 in 1854. At the time, the nine foot tall by nearly six foot wide canvas was rolled up and tied, later to be framed and hung by members of the Lodge. The work is paint signed by Leutze and dated 1845, the overall size including the frame 9 feet 7 inches by 6 feet 8 inches.
From the walls it has hung on for 170 years in Bethlehem, PA to our gallery, visitors and collectors will have an opportunity to bid on Leutze’s work live and online on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.
