The Connecticut River Book Auction to be held on September 3rd and 4th as an absentee book auction features hundreds of art books to be sold mostly in lots of ten volumes. There are books about books from the Barbara Farnsworth collection as well as a good selection of history and fiction including a 1st edition 2nd issue of the Scarlet Letter. For those interested in atlases, there is a signed first edition copy of Lange’s (1854) Atlas von Nord America inscribed by the author to the respected scientist Benjamin Silliman.
For cartographers, there is Smith’s 1856 linen backed Map of New Haven County, Connecticut.
Of special note is Mitchell’s 1844 National Map of the American Republic or United States of North America together with Maps of the Vicinities of 32 of the Principal Cities and Towns in the Union. This 31.5” x 48.74 map of the eastern United States is surrounded by inserts that includes population tables, the treaty of 1842 settling the border dispute between Maine and New Brunswick and depicts territories as yet unnamed showing impending western expansion.
Lastly, there is a signed letter from Commodore Winfield Scott Schley to Charles C. Goodrich on the stationary of the USS Brooklyn dated 8/11/1898 from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Brooklyn was Schley’s command ship during the Battle of Santiago Bay.
