ASHEVILLE – On June 11, Brunk Auctions will present the Estate of two philanthropists and sporting enthusiasts, T. Kenneth and Karin Ellis of Hot Springs, Virginia. Highlights of their Estate include a Fine Tiffany & Co. Tulip and Bamboo Floor Lamp ($80,000-$100,000), Henry Merwin Shrady’s Buffalo ($80,000-$120,000), Christian Adolf Schreyer’s Warrior Watering His Horse ($20,000-$30,000), and a Classic Ceylon Sapphire and Diamond Ring ($10,000-$20,000).
Mrs. Karin R. Ellis was born in Hamburg, Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1956 following her marriage to Carl W. Berhens. She married Mr. T. Kenneth Ellis in 1969, after the death of both their spouses, and moved across the road to live at Stepping Stones, a Tudor style estate nestled in the rolling hills of Hot Springs, Virginia.
The one-of-a-kind manor house and multiple outbuildings, including a greenhouse, guest cottages and several barns and stables, were built over several years by Kenneth Ellis’s mother Florence Adams Ellis, and her husband George A. Ellis, co-founder of E.F. Hutton and Co. The two spared no expense in the construction, and the estate proved to be a treasure trove. Each outbuilding presented new and exciting finds. A 1972 Volvo 1800 ES ($10,000-$15,000) was found in a barn, Fine Stone Garden Jesters and Monkeys were tucked away in the garden (Pair of Fine Stone Garden Jesters, $3,000-$5,000) and Pair of Fine Stone Garden Monkeys ($3,000-$5,000), and A Set of 12 Repousse Sterling Goblets and Pitcher ($4,000-$6,000) were hidden in the butler’s pantry.
The Ellises’ love of fox hunting, horses, and dogs is visible throughout the collection. These interests are showcased through Florent Willem’s A Gift of Clover ($2,000-$3,000), Westley Richards .425 Magnum Express Rifle ($3,000-$5,000), and Two Patinated Bronze Hunting Trophy Wall Plaques ($1,000-$1,500).
Sixty-five jewelry lots will be sold. Of these offerings, highlights include A Tiffany & Co. Platinum Diamond Ring ($16,000-$24,000), Tiffany & Co. 18kt Lapis and Diamond Bracelet ($8,000-$12,000), David Webb 18kt. Enamel and Ruby Frog Brooch ($8,000-$12,000), and A Raymond Yard Diamond & Gemstone Brooch ($5,000-$7,000).
