HUDSON, N.Y. — Public Sale is conducting a vintage t-shirt auction on June 12, starting at noon.
The t-shirt is an iconic part of fashion and culture in the United States and around the world. T-shirts were initially designed as undergarments, though they have now emerged as much more than that. The messages and imagery on the t-shirts of today tell stories and convey moods.
For decades, t-shirts have been used by companies as a form of advertisement and sold by bands, zoos and museums as souvenirs. Today, the t-shirt is an essential garment in many people’s closets and a part of many people’s lives worldwide. Most of us have had a favorite t-shirt at some point, whether we still own it, or it disintegrated as a result of many trips through the wash and many days played and worked in it.
Public Sale’s vintage t-shirt gallery show is running June 5-11, culminating in the auction on June 12, with some 400 vintage t-shirts of every variety included: A large collection of Harley Davidson t-shirts gathered by one biker for most of his life from all over the United States; concert tees from The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, Guns n Roses, Stevie Wonder and more. Also included is a rare and early U2 concert t-shirt from a show at the Ritz in New York City. The show was on St Patrick’s Day in 1982, only six years after the band was formed.
Other notable t-shirts include several original 1969 Woodstock Music Festival souvenir shirts, as well as t-shirts from tattoo parlors in California and Las Vegas, and a few t-shirts from Duke Kahanamoku’s bar in Hawaii. The t-shirts range from the World War II era to the early 2000s with a t-shirt for everyone, regardless of taste, up for auction.
Also included along with the vintage t-shirts will be several store display pieces from the original Bobby from Boston, a vintage clothing store established in 1995. The founder, Bobby Garnett, was a style icon. Approximately 50 pieces that Garnett had in his original store and showroom will be sold at Public Sale, none of which were ever for sale until now. Multidrawer cabinets, store shelving, glass-front haberdashery cabinets, clothing racks, display tables, advertising signs, including a giant DubbleWare sign, which can be seen in the background of many photographs of Garnett, will go up for auction.
Public Sale will be open for the gallery show/preview June 5-11 from 10 am to 5 pm. The sale will be conducted online only, with no in-person bidding available. Absentee bids, phone bids and Internet bidding are all available.
