WINDHAM, N.H. — The Schmitt Horan & Co summer sale will be an online-only event with live close, and all lots are currently open for bidding. The auction will end on July 10, beginning at 10:30 am Eastern, with all items being sold in numerical order and using a live sale format. A live video feed on July 10 will spotlight auctioneer Daniel Horan receiving final bids and will be available via a YouTube link on the firm’s website. While Schmitt Horan & Co is best known for its auctions of horological material, mechanical music and scientific instruments, the current sale also includes three antique automobiles, a Harley Davidson trike, Black Forest carvings, a large selection of canes and walking sticks, antique and vintage advertising, inkstands and desk items, pottery, lamps and other decorative objects.
The sale begins with the offering of three antique automobiles, including a rare 1968 Corvette convertible with optional hard or soft top, a 1966 Ford Mustang six-cylinder and a Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner with retractable roof. A 2002 Harley Davidson Road King trike conversion will follow. A selection of antique and vintage advertising and signs, including a monumental, three-part, colorless glass display for Bunte Bros candies, a mid-Twentieth Century enamel Mobilgas rest room sign with Pegasus logo, 7-Up door pushes and an enameled half round barber pole by the Bob White Sign Co, Milwaukee, etc.
Black Forest offerings include a carved linden plant stand with seated bear, a carved linden smoking stand with bear, a carved and colorless glass epergne, animal-form musical crop and coat hooks, nutcrackers, inkstands, clocks, boxes and carved trays and bowls, etc. Other decorative items will include lamps with painted and leaded glass shades, Doulton pottery, cast iron doorstops and a large collection of canes and walking sticks.
Attention then turns to the horological, musical and scientific items that the firm is well known for. Featured will be several music boxes and other musical items, including a large singing bird cage attributed to Bontems and an extensive collection of Twentieth Century whistlers by Karl Griesbaum, many rare and hard to find. Wristwatches will include a single-owner Rolex 16233 Datejust wrist watch with box and service papers, a stainless steel Rolex ref. 1601 Oyster Perpetual wrist watch with date, a gold Hamilton electric Ventura wrist watch and others by Omega, Hamilton, Zodiac, Seiko and Tag Heuer, many in gold cases.
Pocket watch offerings will include a Swiss 18K gold minute repeater, a Movado Calendarmeto triple date moon phase purse watch with box, an Elgin gold 16 size convertible pocket watch and many other American and European examples, many in gold cases.
The sale will conclude with a wide variety of American and European clocks sold individually and in multiple lots. European highlights include a collection of more than two dozen carriage clocks, a collection of Junghans swinging arm and novelty clocks and other swingers, a collection of Lenzkirch clocks, a Black Forest carved shelf clock with torsion pendulum and much more.
Among the American offerings are many tall clocks and hanging and standing jewelers regulators, including a Waterbury Regulator #60, Seth Thomas Office Calendar #11 case and dial only, Gilbert Regulator #12 Standing, Ithaca Regulator No. 1 (incomplete), Austrian / German grande sonnerie, etc. Early American clocks will include Hoadley, Terry, Leavenworth, off-center pillar and scroll, window shade alarm and others. A large number of Ansonia swinging doll and Seth Thomas calendar mantel clocks and Lux novelties will be sold, as well as Ithaca, Howard and Chelsea clocks, including a Utica Steam Gauge Co marine-style clock with E. Howard & Co lever movement. Many horological books, tools and parts are also included in this sale.
