BRIMFIELD, MASS. — Brimfield Antiques Shows’ Hertan’s is gearing up for one of the biggest and most exciting shows in the field’s history. By now everyone has heard the story about how the current owners purchased the show in January 2020 for $1 million, just in time for the Covid-19 pandemic and the herculean effort by Klia Ververidis, chief executive officer of Brimfield Antiques Shows, and her crew to move the show online in May 2020 and the very successful move to bring the show north to New Hampshire.
At that event, more than 9,000 shoppers and more than 300 vendors attended in rain and cold. Nothing, however, compares to the excitement and buzz surrounding the July show. The show will open on Wednesday July 14, promptly at noon when the bell rings. “We’ve waited so long for this, and we’re planning some very special events for this show. We want everyone to remember this show as the most fun one ever,” stated Ververidis.
The show, which is appropriately named Brimfield Rises, will feature a full field that will look more like the May show than a typical July show, which generally has 30 percent fewer vendors than May. “Vendor registrations are coming in faster than we can process them,” said Ververidis. Several new fresh faces will be joining the seasoned veterans this July, including Ryan Picirillo of Memory Hole Vintage, who will be selling out of his converted 40-foot school bus traveling show booth. This will be Picirillo’s first appearance in Brimfield. “I am so excited to be a part of it. We’re gonna have a blast,” he said.
In an effort to stop the early selling, which was rampant in the last few years before the pandemic, the show will now be gated on opening day and there will be a $5 First Pick ticket admission charge to get in on opening day. After opening day, the fence will come down. In the old days when Jean Hertan owned the field, vendors were not allowed to take a single thing out of their vehicle before the opening bell at noon on Wednesday. If they did, they were thrown off the field immediately. The rule was relaxed in the last few years because vendors wanted to set up in a more relaxed fashion, but because the field wasn’t gated, people would walk on and wanted to shop while vendors were setting up. This created an antagonistic situation between buyers who didn’t want to wait until noon to shop and vendors who didn’t want to lose a sale but also didn’t want to violate the rules. “It was really causing irreparable damage to the show and killing that Brimfield rush, so we took a survey and the majority of the vendors that responded wanted the fence,” said Ververidis. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the company’s website for no waiting, touch-free entrance onto the field or at the gate.
The show is being sponsored by Ruby Lane, which has been partnering with Brimfield Antiques Shows throughout the pandemic to deliver the online show Brimfield Live Online. There will be a large hospitality tent sponsored by Brimfield Antiques Shows and Ruby Lane where people can sit down, have a cold beverage, cool off and participate in the online show, which will be streaming live from Hertan’s field all week. For shoppers who cannot make it to the live show, they will be able to shop the virtual all week long in the first ever in-person and online show hybrid; it can be viewed both on brimfieldlive.com and rubylane.com and on the Brimfield Antiques Shows Facebook page @brimfieldlive.
Some special events are also planned during the week. Returning to Hertan’s on Thursday at 5:30 pm is the Original Brimfield Auction by Brimfield/Crown Auctions. The auction will feature approximately 250 lots, which will be sold at a fast-paced rate with no reserves and no buyer’s premium. The auction is a popular event with vendors as many use the auction to restock for the weekend. “Our best customers are the vendors and usually the items they buy at the auction are sold on the field before they leave the show! It’s a great way to restock without going home and it’s a lot of fun,” said Vereridis.
On Friday night, Brimfield Antiques Shows, Hertan’s will host a Studio Vintage 4 Disco Dance Party featuring a DJ spinning disco tunes and some tasty treats. This event is open to everyone and is a free event. Doors open at 6 pm in the Brimfield Antiques Shows/Ruby Lane hospitality tent. Disco attire is encouraged, and prizes will be given to the best outfits and best disco dancers.
Finally, on Saturday, July 17, Brimfield Antiques Shows and Ruby Lane will host the headlining event, an appraisal afternoon with Leigh Keno, who will do live appraisals on stage. “It will be like watching the television show but in person!” stated Ververidis. Tickets are $2, and are on sale now on the company’s website. A portion of the ticket sale proceeds will be donated to the local nonprofit the Hitchcock Free Academy in Brimfield, an organization that enriches the lives of area residents of all ages by providing educational, recreational and cultural programming for residents from the towns of Brimfield, Holland, Wales, Sturbridge and the surrounding communities. Anyone who can attend the event and would like to have an item considered for appraisal by Keno may submit photos to brimfieldlive@gmail.com.
