NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace will present an auction on August 22 of items from New York City Metropolitan area estates.
Fine art highlights begin with a Dutch School Seventeenth Century oil on panel attributed to Cornelis Saftleven (1607-1681) depicting a river landscape with figures. The painting bears an exhibition, gallery or other label on frame reverse. Next is a likely Seventeenth or Eighteenth Century Dutch or northern European baroque oil on panel altarpiece depicting biblical scenes with figures in a darkly lit interior. The piece is housed in a period ebonized and parcel-gilt frame with an arched top. The section continues with “Girl with Flower,” a portrait of a seated girl holding a flower by Ruth Schloss, and a 1930s lithograph by Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975) titled “Planting.” Also included are works by Buck McCain, Herbert A. Morgan, Glen Preece, Fletcher Martin and Karen Mandelbaum.
Jewelry is highlighted by a vintage pair of Angela Cummings 18K yellow gold, onyx, opal and black enamel doorknocker-style clip earrings with dome cabochon opals on top and bottom and a swing reverse heart design. The sale continues with a pair of vintage Tiffany & Co. 14K yellow gold double knot cufflinks from a 460 East 79th Street estate. Highlights also include a vintage Roberto Coin 18K rose gold and pave diamond rose motif ring, mounted with approximately 28 round brilliant diamonds.
The sale includes a unique collection of Judith Leiber minaudiere clutch handbags in a range of styles. Highlights are a black and clear crystal ram head minaudiere, a silver-tone crystal butterfly minaudiere, a gold-tone crystal butterfly, a crystal and faux-pearl minaudiere and a multicolor geometric crystal minaudiere.
Furniture features a Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller Midcentury Modern FSW-6 six-panel molded plywood folding screen. Furniture continues with a pair of early Eighteenth Century Italian baroque inlaid walnut and olive wood cabinets. Next is a FW Papke Austrian Viennese miniature court cupboard, circa 1900, possibly a salesman sample. The carved wood case features tooled details and applied tooled leather panels, the door has a painted scene of a reclining woman surrounded by putti playing music and reading. F.W. Papke was a venerable company based in Vienna, renowned for its leatherwork, gallantry and art bookbinding during the monarchy. The firm was located on Mozartplatz (Mozartgasse 4) in Vienna’s 4th district of Wieden. Papke received the silver medal at the exhibition in Paris in 1894 and at the exhibition in Antwerp in 1894. Lighting highlights include a Fortuny Scudo Saraceno gilt silk chandelier.
Silver seekers will find a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver centerpiece bowl, circa 1891-1902, with ornate floral motif repousse and pierced decoration to rim, raised on four paw feet. Also featured is an R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co. (Wallingford, Conn.) sterling silver “Sir Christopher” pattern flatware service, 75 pieces, comprising 12 weighted handle dinner knives, 12 dinner forks, 12 salad forks, 12 hors d’oeuvres forks, 12 soup spoons, 12 teaspoons, 12 individual solid spreaders, 2 serving spoons, and one serving fork, maker’s marks on reverse.
Decorative arts highlights include two unique lots of obelisks. The first is a pair of Continental Grand Tour-style black slate obelisk sculptures, each featuring tapering columns with patchwork specimen stone inlay surmounting plinth inset with white floral pietra dura designs. Next is an Egyptian Revival pair of marble obelisks ornamented with figures, hieroglyphics, scarabs and other symbols.
