Of special interest are an identified Lieut. Alfred W. Kredel’s 1861-1865 Pennsylvania foot locker with personal effects and photographs; and an 1850-60 one-pounder bronze and iron cannon. Additional items for sale include four Civil War armed soldier tintypes, including a quarter-plate seated uniformed solder with a rifle, one-eighth plate waist-up of uniformed solder with a rifle and hand gun, an eighth-plate standing soldier with a sword and two revolvers and an eighth-plate full figure of a standing soldier holding a long musket.
Of special interest is a collection of papers, photographs, letters and journal belonging to William Cameron Forbes (1870-1959) who was a noted American investment banker and diplomat from Boston. He was the son of William Hathaway Forbes, president of Bell Telephone company, and son-in-law of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He graduated from Harvard in 1892 and embarked on a successful business career. During the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt, he was commissioner of commerce and police in the American colonial Insular Government of the Philippines from 1904 to 1908 and vice governor from 1908 to 1909. During the administration of President William Howard Taft, Forbes served as governor-general of the Philippines from 1909 to 1913 and was US ambassador to Japan from 1930 to 1932 under President Hoover. Forbes first went to the Philippines in 1904; with experience and connections, he played a decisive role in shaping the future of the Philippine Islands.
This large lot includes, among many items, a spiral-bound notebook on the early history of Baguio (a city designed by Daniel Burnham and the summer capital of the Philippines) from the personal journals of Forbes when he first arrived in the Philippines; 1909-10 large leather-bound embossed album of Christmas and holiday greeting cards from VIPS, generals (Pershing, George C., Marshall), other diplomats and friends; and a crop stick with silverplated top embossed emblem of Philippines.
