In a fine and decorative arts auction to be conducted on Saturday, August 28, Cordier Auctions will be offering a rare document seldom seen at auction. The Manifesto & Proclamation of 1778 was Britain’s final attempt at reconciliation following the signing of the Declaration of Independence. New to the market, this broadside is an exciting highlight to an auction filled with Americana, fine art and jewelry.
In 1778, after the defeat at Saratoga, the British government issued a proposal of peace to the former colonies. Fearing an alliance between the French and Americans, a commission was formed to present a Manifesto and Proclamation to the colonies offering general amnesty and pardon with internal self-government and the repeal of Parliamentary taxation. Printed in New York by James Rivington, a Tory printer and reputed continental spy, the double column broadside was not well received by the colonists; Rivington’s shop was set afire by an angry mob and as history indicates, the colonies declined England’s offer. This example, consigned by a direct descendant of Mary Rittenhouse (1795-1873), is untrimmed with the woodcut of the Royal arms to the top. It carries an estimate of $10/15,000.
The auction will also include fine and decorative arts, furnishings, sterling, jewelry and collectibles. Other highlights will include an inlaid Pembroke table from New York circa 1790-1810 ($1/2,000), and a pastel portrait by Henry Clive (1881-1960) ($2/3,000). A 4-carat pair of diamond stud earrings will also be offered ($6/12,000) as well as a Patek Philippe for Tiffany 18K gold pocket watch ($2/3,000).
Bidding for the auction will be available online beginning August 20. Previews are by appointment only.
