GLOUCESTER, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions will conduct a special fall fine art auction this year on Sunday, September 19, starting at 10 am AM EST at the North Shore Art Association at 11 Pirates Lane. Kaminski has once again reserved this special venue for the auction after the success of the October 2018 William H. Trayes Jr sale that took place in the same space.
The fall fine arts auction will feature the maritime collection of Anthony Athanas of Anthony’s Pier 4, the General Glover House, Hawthorne-By-The-Sea Tavern and Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn, the fine art collection of Dr David L. Vastola of Rockport, Mass., and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
In addition to these New England collections, a collection of midcentury works found in a storeroom at the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, N.Y., during the pandemic features works by Calder, Willem de Kooning, Robert Dash, Esteban Vincente and a series of woodcuts by the artist Rose de Rose, a Southampton socialite.
Easthampton was a thriving artists’ colony at one time, and artists such as Willem de Kooning and his wife Elaine, abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and many more summered or maintained residences in the Hamptons. More than 100 artworks by midcentury artists from 1950s through the 1990s will be represented in the sale.
These prints, paintings and woodcuts will be presented at auction as part of the fall fine arts sale. All proceeds from this collection will benefit the Southampton Hospital Association.
The expected top lot in the auction is a maritime painting by Robert Salmon (British, 1775-1845) titled “An Armed Merchantman on the Mersey Passing Bidston in Wirral 1803,” oil on canvas, signed in the lower-left corner R.S. 1809, and hosting a Richard Green, London label, verso. This painting measures 32 by 52 inches ($30/50,000).
British maritime art in the sale continues with paintings by Louis Dodd (1943-2006), G. Clarkson Stanfield, (1828-1878), J. Scott (1802-1885) and several by Brian Coole.
Cape Ann and New England paintings in the sale include works by Emile Gruppe, Anthony Thieme, Antonio Cirino, A. Hibbard, Aiden Lassell Ripley, Charles Movalli, Donald Mosher and Kenneth Knowles, among others. There are also paintings by Gertrude Abercrombie, Thomas Joseph and Howard Behrens.
The highlight of the Southampton Hospital collection is a Calder, “Boomerang,” print, from 1971, as well as a series of abstract prints and etchings, by De Kooning, Butchkes, Esteban Vicente, Robert Dash, Najdzionek, K.B. Howard, M. Radzow, Syd Solomon, Rodolfo (1930-2002) and more than a dozen wood carvings by Rose de Rose.
Preview for this auction is at the North Shore Art Association, 11 Pirates Lane, Friday and Saturday, September 17-18, from 10 am to 5 pm and starting at 9 am on Sunday, September 19. The preview is open while the auction is live.
