OAKLAND, CALIF. — Clars will present a Modern and contemporary art and design auction on September 17. The sale will be led by Andy Warhol’s iconic “Moonwalk” screenprints ($100/200,000). Printed in 1987, the suite depicts Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin’s famous walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission of 1969. Emphasized in both yellow and pink, the prints capture Warhol’s classic Pop art visuals while simultaneously demonstrating a shift away from commercial imagery to historical events and figures. The works were intended to be a part of a series depicting famous and influential television events, but due to the artist’s death just months after their printing, “Moonwalk” was the only image completed.
Not often do extraordinary works by San Francisco Bay-area artist Paul Wonner (American, 1920-2008) come up for sale. However, Clars will offer two such works, “Flowers and Boxes of Fruit,” 1991, and “Breakfast Table and Roman Head,” 1998-99. These large, still life paintings (at 72 by 72 inches each) will be offered at $80/120,000 and $70/100,000, respectively.
After shattering the world auction record for the highest, global recorded price for the artist in September 2020 ($147,600), Clars will offer the vibrant, as well as rare untitled nude (1976-78) by Raimonds Staprans (American/Latvian, b 1926). This will be the first time a painting of this subject matter by Staprans will be offered at auction ($80/120,000).
Also offered in the print portion of the sale will be “Dawn and Dusk,” completed in 1899 by noted Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860-1939). The lithographs are large horizontal format prints, rarely ever created by the artist, and depict two reclining beauties, symbolized the rising and setting sun ($15/20,000).
Moving on to the design portion of the sale, a number of world-renowned designers will be featured. There will be a selection of American designers, including several pieces by Edward Wormley, a Gondola sofa ($15/20,000) and a pair of Janus armchairs ($4/6,000). Also to be offered is a large George Nelson CSS (Comprehensive Storage unit) with six uprights ($8/10,000) and a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne “Eternal Forest” table ($8/12,000).
The sale will present a Tlingit hat by Preston Singletary, a Native American glass artist, who worked with Seattle-area artists such as Benjamin Moore and Dante Marioni and also spent time at Kosta Boda where he studied Scandinavian design. Singletary took these European and American glass blowing traditions and fused them with Northwest Native art traditions to create blown glass forms with Tlingit designs. The “Hat” features a “Frog” pattern ($7/10,000). The hat is from the estate of John Cologhi, fundraiser for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Preston Singletary’s work is currently on display at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe in the exhibit “Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass,” through June 16, 2022.
Other American designers in the sale include Verner Panton, Adrian Pearsall, Harrison McIntosh, David Cressey, Otto and Vivika Heino, Rudy Autio, Marguerite Wildenhain, Joseph Bulone, Erwine and Estelle Laverne, Walter Lamb, Peter Pepper Products, Charles and Ray Eames and Evelyn Ackerman.
In addition, there will be numerous European makers, with several Danish examples, such as a Finn Juhl teak bowl ($3/5,000) and a Japan chair. An Axel Salto stoneware bowl will feature prominently ($4/6,000). Hans Wegner pieces will be offered, such as an RY100 storage unit, a credenza and CH 23 chairs.
Hermes furniture will also be a highlight in the auction; there will be a suite of Sellier dining chairs ($25/30,000) and a Metiers oval table ($12/16,000).
On September 16, beginning at 10 am PST, the firm’s jewelry and timepiece department will offer a selection of antique jewelry; signed, diamonds and colored gemstone jewelry and timepieces. The sale is highlighted by a selection of antique and retro pieces, which includes a diamond and gemstone brooch by Fabergé workmaster, Oskar Woldemar Pihl ($12/15,000), a Retro diamond and 18K gold convertible bracelet from Cartier ($14/18,000); and a pair of retro sapphire and 18K gold fur clips by Van Cleef & Arpels ($8,5/10,500).
Makers such as Bulgari, are represented in a pair of bicolor 18K gold earrings ($3/5,000). Marina B, an Italian jewelry house established by Marina Bulgari, is represented in an 18K gold bracelet from Onda Serpentine collection ($6/8,000). A 1.60-carats D VS2 diamond and platinum ring, will represent Tiffany & Co. ($18/22,000).
The Asian art department will offer a selection of watercolors by Pan Tseng-Ying (Chinese, 1916-1997) including “Resurrection,” gouache and watercolor on paper ($2/4,000). The watercolors were acquired directly from the artist, circa 1963, New York City. These paintings have never been offered at auction until now and have never been reproduced.
