NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace will present fine art and design on October 10. Highlights include a rare Diego Giacometti table along with works by Raoul Dufy, Jean Dubuffet, Moïse Kisling, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso. The sale includes design and furnishings by Warren Platner for Knoll, Marco Zanuso, Paul Evans, Versace and Carlo Scarpa. Jewelry and fashion highlights round out the catalog with Chanel belts and handbags, a Rolex Oyster Perpetual 18K gold wristwatch, Angela Cummings designs and a rare Vacheron Constantin Art Deco revival 18K and diamond clock.
Objects come from a collection of New York City addresses, including the Fifth Avenue residence of the MacArthur family, the Park Avenue estate of American film producer Martin Bregman and the Fifth Avenue residence of Jill and Ken Iscol.
Fine art highlights include Raoul Dufy’s “L’entrée du port à Sainte-Adresse,” a vibrant seaside oil on canvas, circa 1950 with provenance from Wally Findlay Galleries. Jean Dubuffet’s “Three Palm Trees,” a 1948 watercolor on paper of a tropical abstraction of palm trees, continues the featured lots. The piece bears a Cordier & Ekstrom, Inc. (New York) gallery label on verso. Highlights continue with a still life with flowers by Moïse Kisling titled “Anémones dans un vase,” with provenance from Wally Findlay Galleries. Featured paintings continue with a 1970s abstract composition by Nicaraguan artist Armando Morales, an Impressionist oil on board depicting a lively market scene by George Luks and a street scene by Leon Kroll.
Prints and multiples on offer include Joan Miro’s colorful 1978 etching and aquatint on paper titled “La Métamorphose.” The Miro is number 17 from an edition of 50. The section continues with a rare 1974 lithograph in colors by Marc Chagall titled “Self Portrait.” The Chagall is number 22 from an edition of 50. The sale continues with a sculptural lamp vase, a white earthenware ceramic vase with colored engobe and glaze by Pablo Picasso inscribed “Edition Picasso” and with “Madoura Plein Feu” stamp. Next is Pablo Picasso’s 1967 color linoleum cut titled “Carnaval,” number 116 from the edition of 160.
Sculpture highlights include a large 1968 abstract aluminum sculpture of an undulating vertical form by the Croatian sculptor Vjenceslav Richter and a 1979 geometric totem in brushed metal over composite on a painted base by Isaac Kahn. Next are two Cubist cast patinated bronze sculptures of women with abstract figures by Dominique Pollès. Sculptures by Charles Owen Perry, Gottfried Honegger, Alexandra Lazareff and Arnaldo Pomodoro round out the offerings.
The sale includes a collection of antiquities highlighted by a late Eighteenth/Nineteenth dynasty (circa 1400-1196 BCE) Egyptian carved limestone wall fragment carved in sunk relief featuring a kneeling figure facing right. Next are two colorful ancient Greek core-formed glass amphoriskos, circa Eighth to Tenth Century (acquired prior to 1979). Also of note is an ancient Egyptian tomb fragment, circa XVIII dynasty, 1500 BC, relief in polychromed limestone from the Tombs of the Queens (acquired prior to 1981).
Furnishings and design begin with a rare Nineteenth Century English Axminster palace-sized wool carpet in the manner of Thomas Whitty or Jacques Moreno Pontremoli. Next is an Andre Arbus French Art Deco mahogany center table, circa 1931, exhibited at the Paris Salon d’Automne in 1931. The sale continues with a Warren Platner for Knoll Midcentury Modern dining table with circular tinted glass top on chrome basket base with four upholstered dining chairs. Next are a pair of Tommi Parzinger Midcentury Modern white lacquered and brass-studded side tables followed by a pair of 1950s T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb Midcentury Modern slipper chairs with wooden frames. A classic Eames for Herman Miller Midcentury Modern lounge chair and ottoman with black leather upholstery continues the collection. Next are a Paul Evans for Directional 1970s brutalist modern “Patchwork” planter in patinated copper and aluminum and a Marco Zanuso (1916-2001) for Artflex Italian Midcentury Modern “Bridge Chair” folding armchair.
Lighting includes a brass and glass Tommi Parzinger six-light chandelier, a monumental Carlo Scarpa for Venini Murano glass “Poliedri” chandelier, formed from multiple tiers of polyhedral glass prisms on a white metal frame, and a Fendi Casa Italian modern “Cassiopeia” table lamp in chromed metal.
Decorative Arts are highlighted by an Art Deco revival gem set gold clock, the 18K gold case includes diamond embellished gold hands nestled in the upright paws of a reclining bear with ruby eyes outlined in gold.
