IPSWICH, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions’ October 2-3 auction will be conducted onsite at the Waldingfield estate in Ipswich. Built in 1929 by Julia Appleton and her husband Charles Sumner Bird II as their quintessential hunting lodge, the estate sits atop 40 acres overlooking the Ipswich River with formal gardens, French tree allée and horse trails.
Waldingfield was purchased in 1984 by Arthur J. Finklestein, a notable conservative strategist who masterminded the political campaigns of numerous presidents, senators and governors. Finklestein was described as “innovative and influential” in a New York Times article. He is credited with revolutionizing campaign polling and funding and was instrumental in the election and reelection of many conservative politicians, including Ronald Regan, US Senator Alfonse D’Amato, James L. Buckley, Orrin Hatch and Strom Thurmond, to name a few. In his later years, Finklestein was a close advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and the president of Albania.
For more than 30 years, Finklestein and his partner, Donald Curiale, raised two daughters at Waldingfield and lovingly restored the home to its present elegance. A selection of English and European furniture, fine art and decorative arts, many original to the chateau, will be on offer in the auction, as well as additions from other estates.
A selection of paintings from the collection includes a work by Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839-1924), titled “Interesting News.” The oil on panel is signed “Ridgway Knight Paris,” from the Hammer Galleries New York City, and Dudensing Galleries, New York, with labels verso ($20/30,000). Another painting from the collection that the owners purchased at Sotheby’s The British Sale, London, July 4, 2001, is by John Nost Sartorius (English, 1759-1828), titled “Over the Beacon Course, Newmarket, May 4th, 1790.” It is an oil on canvas, signed and dated 1790. English art continues with a painting by James Loder (English, 1784-1860), “Racehorse with Jockey Up and his Owner Standing,” also an oil painting on canvas, signed and dated “J Loder Pinxt Bath 1838.”
European art from the collection includes a painting by the French artist Louis-Emile Adan (1830-1937), titled “Welcome Refreshment,” an oil on canvas, signed l. Emile Adan, and a Nineteenth Century Dutch painting of a landscape with a boat at the shoreline, initialed “PRN” and dated 1880.
English furniture on offer includes a circa 1820 period Georgian, mahogany three-pedestal dining table, antique with banded inlay on the top, and spiral carved pedestals, each with four hairy paws on brass casters. There are three leaves with the table and, open fully, it measures 160 inches long. A circa 1810 English Georgian mahogany graduated four-drawer secretary bookcase with a flat molded cornice, double glazed door, and a pull-out writing surface, also features in the sale.
Two English pier mirrors are among the top lots featured in the sale. They include a Nineteenth Century mirror decorated with a figural lion’s head and griffin-decorated crest and an Eighteenth/early Nineteenth Century English Adams-style pier mirror featuring 12 sections with gilt, black painted rope design partitions and a ball and rosette decorated cornice.
Original to the Waldingfield chateau and presented in the auction is a Nineteenth Century French bronze 12-light chandelier with the figure of Diana the Huntress and a pair of Nineteenth Century continental cut glass and brass candle sconces. Several rugs for sale include a custom-designed Nepal rug by J.S. Hurd Rug and Tapestry Design, with six “W”s for Waldingfield incorporated into the design, and a palace size antique Persian Serapi rug.
The auction also features items from the estate of Anthony Athanas. A longtime Swampscott resident, Athanas was one of the premier restaurateurs in the United States with Anthony’s Pier 4, Hawthorne-By-The-Sea, General Glover Inn and Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn on Cape Cod. His collection will be presented by Kaminski as the Anthony Athanas Pier 4 Collection, October 23-24 in an onsite auction at the firm’s warehouse in Danvers, Mass.
Paintings from the Athanas Pier 4 collection include an Eighteenth Century Italian view of a Venice canal, a J.J. Enneking painting of the Blue Hills, a G. Koken, woodland forest view and a W.A. Knell depiction of sailors.
An English silverplate rolling meat serving cart by Drakes London, Model A-1, No. 1242, original to the Pier 4 Restaurant, Boston, is also offered in the sale ($7/$9,000).
The Waldingfield estate is at 55 Waldingfield Road. The sales on each day start at 10 am EST. All lots are available for in person preview on Thursday, September 30, and Friday, October 1, from 10 am to 5 pm and on the days of the sale starting at 8 am.
