WOODBURY, CONN. — Howard A. Legge was a lifelong collector and former dealer in antiques and fine art. His passion for antiquities took him on many adventures, focusing especially in Connecticut and New England but also extending to Sweden and throughout Europe. Main Street Auctions and Estate Liquidators will offer his diverse collection of art, furniture, jewelry, glass and pottery to the public in a live, online-only auction on October 4.
His collection was quite diverse with paintings ranging from Old Masters like an early rendition of Rembrandt’s “Man With The Golden Helmet,” to Midcentury Modern abstract like two early paintings by Burt Shonberg dated 1953. These were painted when Shonberg was only 20 years old and may be some of his earliest works. Burt Shonberg was well known in the late 1960s and early 1970s for his psychedelic artwork and was the artist behind the whimsical portraits in the 1960 Roger Corman film rendition of the House of Usher.
Other noteworthy artwork in the sale includes a cathedral scene by Edward Henry Potthast, a snowy scene by John Sloan, a ship painting by James Edward Buttersworth and a wide array of approximately 100 other paintings.
The sale also includes several pieces of furniture that once resided in churches, such as a partners’ desk made of oak from the Bell-tower of Wells Cathedral and several huge gothic armchairs, stained glass windows, midcentury glassware, sterling silver flatware, thousands of postcards, pottery, coins and jewelry.
Noteworthy jewelry includes a Cartier pearl necklace with gold and diamond clasp and accents, a Charles E Jacot 18K gold pocket watch and a large amethyst cocktail ring.
Bidding for this auction is open and will close October 4 as a live online-only auction beginning at 7 pm. Preview is October 1-3 or by appointment.
