CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — CRN Auctions is gearing up for another diverse sale at the firm’s gallery on Sunday, October 24, starting at 11 am.
The auction features a broad range of items encompassing a variety of origin, style and period and spanning the Seventeenth Century to Midcentury Modern.
Of special note are items from the home of an esteemed Boston area gentleman, a collector and dealer of top-notch American antique furniture, art and accessories, some of whose treasures have been featured in previous CRN sales. Auctioneer Carl Nordblom, well-known for his love of American antiques, said, “We’ve been auctioning since 1976, and this is one of the most exciting collections of Americana we’ve sold. The only equivalent auction was the onsite Petersham, Mass., auction in 1993. These offerings will be a shot in the arm to the market.”
Particularly anticipated from this collection are American primitive portraits. Most exciting is a portrait by itinerant painter John Brewster Jr (1766-1854) of his sister, Sophia Brewster, with a bird on her hand, circa 1800, painted shortly after her death at the age of five. His work has been prominently exhibited worldwide.
Also being sold is a miniature watercolor of a gentleman by Edwin Plummer (1802-1880). Though unsigned, the auction house believes the work is clearly by his hand and executed early in his career, circa 1825. The portrait shows striking similarities to the portrait of his father, Thomas Plummer, paralleling style, coloration and background. Thomas’ portrait is currently residing in the collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Williamsburg, Va.
Enhancing the offering of early American portraits is a large pair, circa 1835, of an affluent couple, possibly painted by William Mathew Prior (1806-1873). The couple, in their original and matching ogee frames, wear gold accessories and sit in front of open windows, showing a glimpse of the American landscape.
Furniture from this collector’s home includes a Rhode Island Queen Anne splayed leg tea table in old red paint, a Newport porringer-top mahogany tea table, a pair of Massachusetts painted, comb-back Windsor armchairs and an Aaron Willard mahogany cased tall clock. Examples of the diversity of taste of this collector is a paint-decorated American artillery drum, circa 1819, a Timby solar timepiece with inset Joslin globe and a polychromed iron Bradley & Hubbard rabbit doorstop.
Another highlight offered from a Beverly, Mass., woman is her collection of nautically themed items, including sailor’s shell valentines, whalebone fids and busks, scrimshaw whales’ teeth and two whalebone yarn swifts, both all original — one features a carved dog’s head clamp, the other with mother-of-pearl inlay and original pink, silk ribbons.
Two gilded copper weathervanes will get the attention of collectors, one a large, full-bodied eagle, the other a double-ship weathervane.
The array of Nineteenth Century Chinese export mandarin and rose famille porcelains from another Massachusetts gentleman’s collection consists of sizable pairs of vases and covered jars, a pair of covered pistol-handled urns, a garden barrel and a bough pot. From a Newport, R.I., home is a Chinese export rose famille coffee and tea service of 48 pieces with historical provenance of its original South American owners, the da Costa family. The wife’s father was a colonel in Napoleon’s navy. Marine paintings from this Newport home are also being sold.
CRN Auctions traditionally commences each auction with works of art. Starting off are six paintings by Gloucester, Mass., icon Emile Gruppe (1896-1978). Recognized as a leader in the art scene of coastal Massachusetts, Gruppe was known for his impressionistic landscapes and marine paintings.
The paintings being sold range from snowy landscapes to rushing streams to harbor scenes. All of these works are fresh to the market, the first four lots having their first time out from the Connecticut home of a woman who was a close friend of the artist. A group of contemporary art comes from the collection of a Boston couple. English and European works of art have been gathered from various local homes. Two bronzes by Boston women sculptors graced the stone patio of a North Shore, Mass., estate — a Bashka Paeff bird bath and a large figural statue by Anna Coleman Ladd. Both artists have works in the Boston Public Garden.
CRN’s gallery is at 57 Bay State Road. For information, www.crnauctions.com or 617-661-9582.
