PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques will conduct its fall live online fine arts auction on Saturday, October 23, at 1 pm. This auction features artworks from local estates and several prominent Provincetown and Cape Cod collectors. Leading the sale is “Building Manhattan,” a 1935 oil by William L’Engle ($20/30,000) and a ship painting, “The Francis,” painted in 1894 by Charles Sydney Raleigh ($15/20,000).
Other masterworks from the Provincetown Art Colony include “Provincetown,” an oil by Arthur Woelfle ($3/5,000); “The Distress Signal” by Sol Wilson ($4/6,000); and “View from the Hill” by noted illustrator Stevan Dohanos ($2/3,000). Works by Gerrit Beneker, Joseph Birren, James Floyd Clymer, Arthur Cohen, Nanno de Groot, Arthur Diehl, John Hare, Henry Hensche, Karl Knaths, William Littlefield, Ross Moffett, Ray Nolin, Vollian Rann, John Whorf, Taro Yamamoto and George Yater will be offered, as well as selections of works by contemporary Provincetown painters such as Richard Baker, Robert Cardinal, Christopher Sousa, Mark Beard, Salvatore Del Deo, Chet Jones, John Dowd and Larry Horowitz.
The selection of works by women artists features “Distant Boats” by Anne Packard ($10/15,000) and “Provincetown Porch” by Edith Lake Wilkinson ($4/6,000), the artist featured in an HBO documentary, Packed in a Trunk. Paintings and watercolors by other women artists associated with the Provincetown Art Colony include Greta Allen, Florence Brillinger, Nancy Craig, Pat de Groot, Dorothy Lake Gregory, Brenda Horowitz, Joan Cobb Marsh, Margaret Patterson, Ada Rayner, Helen Sawyer, Ferol Warthen and Nancy Whorf.
A 1977 Long Point Gallery poster of 12 original works signed by all the members, including Robert Motherwell, three white-line color woodblock prints by Kathryn Lee Smith, including “Cattails II”($2/3,000) and other prints by Sally Brophy, Ruth Hogan, Judith Shahn and Maude Squire are just a few of the print highlights. Five oil paintings by Provincetown artists will be sold to benefit the Provincetown Arts Society. Sculpture by Atelier Ball, a pair of bronze bookends by William Boogar and two Art Strand portfolios with 12 original works signed by the 12 artist members round out the sale with something for everyone.
