MARBLE AUCTION #1123

TRUMBULL CONN. — Block’s Marble Auction, the longest running marble auction, will conduct its 1,123rd auction on Saturday October 16. This timed online auction features a number of rare and antique, vintage and collectible marbles, as well as marble-related items.
The highlight of the sale is a rare Gropper Onyx Marble Company Christensen Agates Favorite Marble Assortment box. This original box comes with the original marbles. There are five sizes in this series of boxes, which date from the mid-1920s. In ascending size, they are a tiny square box with a cut-out C, a tan Favorite Marble Assortment with two diagonal cutouts and cutout center circle, a salmon and green box with three diagonal cutouts, this green box and then a larger red Favorite Marble Assortment that is even rarer than this one. The three largest have similar graphics of boys running around and playing with oversized marbles. The green one, of which this is an example, is by far the most bizarre. The back depicts the head of a boy in the upper left corner with marbles pouring out of his mouth, and two other boys running to get the marbles.
This example includes ten Christensen Agate Company Slags in various colors and 15 dyed clays (likely Albright Company). These marbles are likely original to the box. It is known that Christensen Agate Company included dyed clays in many of its early boxes. Robert Block, principal of Block’s Marble Auctions, said that there are only three examples of this box that have come to auction in the past 25 years. This is probably the most bizarre, and certainly one of the rarest, boxes in all of marble collecting.
The auction also includes a number of other original marble boxes, as well as individual marbles, including handmade Sulphides, Swirls, Onionskins and Lutzes, and various machine-made marbles such as Oxbloods, National Line Rainbos, Comics and Sparklers.
Bidding for this auction is online only. Lots begin to close at the rate of one each minute at 7 pm EDT on Saturday, October 16. The full catalog, images, bidding information and contact information can be found at www.marbleauctions.com.
