PLAINVILLE, CONN. — Winter Associates is presenting an eclectic sale on October 25, starting at 5:30 pm, featuring jewelry, early American portraiture, prints, antiques and more. More than 90 lots of jewelry with 18K, 14K, platinum and silver is being offered; an 18K, diamond and platinum leopard pin by Asch/Grossbardt leads the group, along with a selection of two-tone yellow and rose gold retro pieces, Tiffany offerings, including bracelets and earrings and a tanzanite and diamond ring with the center tanzanite stone of 3.5 carats. Vintage finds include 18K diamond waterfall drop earrings, many Edwardian pieces set with diamonds and sapphires: ten rings, two pins and a necklace, also David Yurman, Georg Jensen, Roberto Coin and other pieces.
A selection of early American portraits comes from the estate of Warren C. Lane. For a Ruth Henshaw Bascom pastel on cream wove paper, the sitter and date is indicated by an early pencil inscription. Depicted is a profile portrait of Mary Denny Lincoln, created only three years before Bascom’s death at 75 years of age. Purchased at Skinner in 1990, this portrait is accompanied by a Lois S. Avigad letter about the work’s inclusion in the catalogue raisonné. The work shows Bascom’s typical pastel technique, tracing the shadow of her sitters. Juliette Tomlinson, author of the catalog raisonné for Joseph Whiting Stock, reviewed this charming young boy in a blue check outfit, mid-play with a drumstick in hand beside a green and red drum. In addition, there is a portrait inscribed and attributed to William M. Prior, another of sitter attorney Elias Black Burton and a “Nathaniel Chandler painted by Winthrop Chandler,” etc.
George Bellows, Paul Cadmus, Mary Cassatt, George Braque, Andrew Wyeth, Benton M. Spruance, Zao Wou-ki, Francisco Zuniga are printmakers whose works will be in the sale. “The White Hope” by Bellows is a now controversial trope of white opponents defeating black opponents in boxing; in this image, Jack Johnson, a black boxer, is depicted moments after his winning blow against his white opponent James Jeffries.
Sterling includes a Tiffany punch bowl and flatware. There will be Nineteenth and Twentieth Century ceramics, furnishings, Oriental rugs, Asian art and more.
Previews are Friday, October 22, noon to 4 pm; Sunday, October 24, 2 to 4 pm; and Monday, October 25, noon to 5 pm, or schedule an appointment.
