PHILADELPHIA — Kamelot Auctions presents the collection of Lois Cohen in the modern sale on October 26. Born in Pittsburgh, Penn., Cohen had an affinity for collecting very early in life. Once she was married, she began avidly collecting all types of artworks. The pair quickly became regulars at galleries such at Maxwell Davidson, Blaine and Booth, Rolly-Michaux and Beth Urdang. Cohen purchased her rare Niki de Saint Phalle piece titled “Nana on a Dolphin” sculpture from Maxwell Davidson gallery in 1992. This rare sculpture is estimated between $40/60,000. She kept many of the original receipts for her art collection.
Kamelot Auctions will conduct a three-day sale featuring French, Italian and American Modern furniture, lighting and decorative arts on October 26, an interior sale on October 27 and a continental Victorian sale on October 28.
The October 26 auction features a Reading estate from an elite, longtime collector. This estate includes renowned fine artists, such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul and William H. Bailey.
The modern sale has everything from a Franz Hangenauer Cubist nickel-plated head sculpture, circa 1930, to a signed William H. Bailey painting titled “Still Life Terontola.” A thought-provoking painting Jean-Pierre Cassignueul, “At the Races,” is an oil on canvas painting in an original carved wood frame ($20/40,000).
Understated elegance to one’s home can be achieved by including a bird’s-eye maple four-drawer dresser, circa 1960 to the décor. For a little bit more storage space, there is an exotic sideboard having bird’s-eye maple, ribbon mahogany and burled walnut with four doors and drawers, circa 1950.
The interior sale on October 27 is the perfect sale for the avid Art Deco collector. A three-piece French marble Art Deco desk set, circa 1930, provides a focal point for an office or mantel. Also offered will a pair of Art Deco silveredplated metal skyscraper vases, circa 1920, and a pair of polished iron and mirror Art Deco-style end tables ($600/900).
A French Art Deco sideboard, circa 1935, features lucite handles. Venturing further into the realms of lucite is a luminous lucite coffee table of continuous design ($300/500) which would pair well with a twisted painted acrylic and lucite floor lamp.
A Royere-style rattan demilune console tables has a woven design, and an unusual dining set comprises a wicker and iron glass top table, circa 1960 ($500/800) and a pair of pencil reed rattan chairs ($600/800). Antiques and bamboo come together with French faux bamboo and cane arm chairs, circa 1900.
The sale offers a wide array of Syrian furniture, including a pair of carved and inlaid Syrian arm chairs, an inlaid corner cabinet with intricate carved detail throughout and mother-of-pearl inlaid accent, plus an inlaid Syrian-style console table with drawers.
The final day of the three-day sale is filled with antiques, whether it is a Victorian brass chandelier with opalescent swirl shades or a pair of carved giltwood eagle sconces. There is even a rare Eastlake mirror fit for royalty.
The inlaid walnut Brunswick pool table, circa 1930, would be the perfect addition to any games room, providing not only style but entertainment as well. A more decorative piece is a Nineteenth Century carved walnut lift lid bench ($1/1,500). A two-part Nineteenth Century carved oak cabinet has a Bacchus carved crest and fowl carved doors ($600/800).
Preview for this auction will take place from October 20-25, 10 am to 4 pm EST each day.
