NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace continues the fall fine art and design auction series with an eclectic blend of Modern art, traditional art and furnishings, along with a collection of Asian art and antiquities on October 24.
The sale is headlined by Richard Hayley Lever’s impressionist harbor scene titled “Early Morning St Ives” with a Clayton-Liberatore gallery label on verso. Also featured is a large portrait of a woman depicted in lavish attire in burnt orange and blues and surrounded by flowers from the studio of Sir Peter Lely bearing a wax seal impressed with marks from Galerie Sedelmeyer (Paris) on verso. Charles Sedelmeyer (1837-1925) operated his gallery between 1884 and 1916 and specialized in Old Masters. He became a trusted art advisor to collectors like Maurice Kahn and J. Pierpont Morgan.
Highlights include an oil on panel genre scene with figures, including a gentleman in a top hat housed in a Heydenryk frame and an iconic bronze portrait of Renoir by Aristide Maillol. The sale also features a large-scale statement Sukhothai fragmentary stucco Buddha head and a carved teak sleeping figure by Ida Bagus Tilem. Lighting includes a Tiffany Studios-attributed turtle back glass chandelier that was removed from a New York City theater by the prior owners.
Additional fine art highlights include a turn-of-the-century equestrian scene, a man on horseback and a woman cloaked in an Art Nouveau outfit by Georges de Feure. The watercolor and gouache on paper titled “Longchamps,” bears a Piccadilly Gallery (London) label on reverse and was removed from a Fifth Avenue residence of the MacArthur family. The sale continues with a French School oil on paper laid to canvas by Hippolyte-Jean Flandrin titled “Left Profile of Woman with Open Mouth.” The work was included in the 1980 exhibition: “Christian Imagery in French Nineteenth Century Art 1789-1906,” at Shepherd Gallery, New York City, and was removed from the Fifth Avenue residence of the MacArthur family. Next is a Nineteenth Century interior of a dining room by Denis-Pierre Bergeret. The work was included in Shepherd Gallery’s 1987 exhibition: “French Nineteenth Century Drawings, Watercolors, Paintings and Sculpture, Spring Exhibition 1987.” Sculpture includes a Maria Luisa Campoy bronze sculpture of two inter-bodied horses atop a stylized carved wood ionic chapter and mounted on a metal stand.
Silver seekers will find a Crichton & Co Ltd (London) sterling silver serving tray (approximately 192 troy ounces), with maker’s mark “LAC” (Lionel Alfred Crichton), marked for London and stamped “Crighton & Co Ltd/ Made In England” on the underside. Also of note is a George V six-piece sterling silver tea and coffee service, Crichton Brothers (London), 1923, consisting of a hot water kettle on stand, teapot, coffeepot, creamer, sugar and waste bowl. The sale also includes a Lunt Delacourt pattern sterling silver partial service of 40 pieces.
Furnishings and lighting include a French Charles X gilt-bronze eight-arm chandelier with mascaron (mask) and a pair of Caldwell Etruscan Revival / Grand Tour of bronze floor lamps.
Asian arts include a Chinese Song dynasty carved jade model of a Tianlu with its head raised in an attentive gaze above its curled up body removed from a private residence at the Pierre Hotel. Next is a Chinese Ming dynasty lacquered and parcel-gilt bronze sculpture of Guandior Guan Yu, depicted as a seated warrior and mounted on a custom metal stand. It is followed by a Chinese Neolithic period, Liangzhu culture jade bi disc on a contemporary metal stand and a Chinese Export famille rose large porcelain vase with court scenes depicting landscapes and playing boys.
The sale includes antiquities. The section opens with an ancient Byzantine Egyptian Coptic culture limestone relief, circa Fourth to Seventh Century CE, deeply carved in high relief with a naked boy leaning behind a foliate branch (acquired prior to 1970). Also featured is a Hittite Limestone round-topped stela, circa 1600-1200 BCE, probably from Ras-Shamra with provenance from Parke Bernet December 11, 1980; plus ancient Greek fragmented reliefs, an early Fifth Century BCE Greek terracotta rooster exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, a Gandhara carved stone architectural figural sculpture, along with Khmer Buddha figures and an Indian stone temple facade fragment, Tenth-Twelfth Century.
