THOMASTON, MAINE — Fine and decorative arts will be offered at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ “Autumn Majestic” auction on November 12-14. On Friday, November 12, the sale will feature the collection of noted advertising photographer Frank Cowan (1934-2003), including Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century English oak furniture, medieval metalwork and 231 lots of ceramics representing Chinese culture from the Neolithic period (pre 1500 BCE) through the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). On Saturday, the auction will present American and European paintings, American furniture and folk art; and on Sunday, the sale will offer Twentieth Century decorative arts and jewelry.
Thomaston Place owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux said, “We have assembled a marvelous catalog of rare and one-of-a-kind pieces to round out our 2021 feature auction season. I look forward to seeing many regular and new buyers at this sale.”
Leading the sale is an oil on canvas painting by Winslow Homer (1836-1910) titled “Coming Through the Rye.” The painting depicts a contemplative young woman with downcast eyes standing in a grain field. Created during a ten-month period Homer spent painting in France, it is inscribed “Homer/Paris 1867.” This work is included in the Artist’s catalogue raisonné and is being offered with provenance and exhibition history.
Also featured is a work by Kees (Cornelis Theodorus Maria) Van Dongen (Dutch/French, 1877-1968) depicting a girl with a flower in her hair. Van Dongen was one of the most influential artists of his time who adopted the fauvist style of bright colors and bold brushwork in the early Twentieth Century and bridged impressionist and expressionist styles.
There will also be paintings by Lilly Martin Spencer (1822-1902, Ivan Aivazovsky (Russian, 1817-1900), John Frederick Kensett (1816-1872), Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908), Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865), Francis Augustus Silva (1835-1886), Neil Welliver (1929-2005), Thomas Moran (1837-1926), Jamie Wyeth (b 1946) Dahlov Ipcar (1917-2017), Robert Salmon (1775-1844), and many others.
A Tiffany Studios bronze table lamp with jeweled Dragonfly leaded glass shade will be presented. Considered one of the most desirable of the Tiffany designs, the Dragonfly shade is composed of hundreds of meticulously arrayed colorful glass pieces. The sale will also offer a signed E.F. Caldwell & Co. ormolu and rouge du roi marble figural centerpiece and a pair of French silver candelabra by Cartier. Other rarities will include a German Renaissance bronze pharmacy mortar, dated 1603; a Sixteenth Century Dutch brass three-tier candle chandelier; a circa 1400 northern European bronze tripod ewer; and a large group of medieval candlesticks.
The collection of Asian artifacts will include an Eighteenth Century Chinese flambe glazed moon flask with Qianlong seal; a Sixteenth Century Thai bronze Buddha altar figure; and a Chinese Yuan dynasty (1272-1368) Cizhou painted “Dragon and Phoenix” stoneware jar.
A 50-lot group of early English oak furniture will be offered, such as a late Sixteenth-early Seventeenth Century joined press cupboard with intricated carved bust portraits and linenfold panels; Elizabethan period three-tier joined court cupboard with bulbous cup and cover support columns; a Seventeenth Century silk and bullion needlework upholstered mirror frame with portraits of Mary Queen of Scots, James IV/I and Elizabeth I; and a Charles II period leather upholstered walnut sleeping chair.
Featured among the American furniture collection will be a rare pair of New York Chippendale period walnut side chairs of graceful proportions, a circa 1700 red painted Deerfield blanket chest and a Pennsylvania Dutch painted six-plank dowry chest dated 1811. Clocks will include an Eighteenth Century mahogany tall clock by Joshua Jackson of Wilmington, Del., and a circa 1905 grand carved walnut Philadelphia tall clock by G.W. Russell.
The sale will present a 1902 Bluthner Kaiser Wilhelm II parlor grand piano that was a royal presentation piece included in the imperial art collection of Austria prior to World War I. An early Twentieth Century Steinway model A-1 baby grand and a walnut Steinway & Sons console piano will also be offered.
Among the 44-lot estate jewelry and watch collection will be an antique platinum and diamond link chandelier necklace with central drop set with a 3.1-carat diamond; a lady’s 18K gold Rolex Datejust wristwatch set with diamonds; and a lady’s 14K white gold, bluish grey star sapphire and diamond ring.
There will be a selection of painted Russian icons from the Seventeenth through Nineteenth Centuries; art pottery, including pieces by George Ohr (1857-1918) and John Bennett (1840-1907); and folk art, featuring a black painted eagle mount and a gilded copper fire pumper-form weathervane. Rounding out the sale will be groups of marine antiques, Oriental carpets, art glass and silver.
The gallery will be open for previews from Monday through Friday, November 1-5 (9 am to 5 pm); Saturday, November 6 (10 am to 3 pm); and Monday through Thursday, November 8-11 (9 am to 5 pm); Previewing will also be available on auction days, Friday-Sunday, November 12-14, from 9 to 11 am.
