WINDHAM, N.H. — The Schmitt Horan & Co. November 20 sale will feature antiques, advertising, still and mechanical banks, tea caddies, inkstands and desk items, brass and copper cookware, horology and Black Forest carvings.
The sale will be an online event with a live close, and all lots are currently open for bidding. The auction concludes on November 20 beginning at 11 am Eastern, with all items being sold in numerical order, and using a live sale format. A live video feed on November 20 will spotlight auctioneer Daniel Horan receiving final bids and will be available via a YouTube link from the firm’s website. While Schmitt Horan & Co. is best known for its auctions of horological material, mechanical music and scientific instruments, the current sale also includes a large selection antique and decorative items appealing to a broad spectrum of buyers.
The sale begins with a selection of antique and vintage advertising and signs, including a chromolithograph poster featuring George the Supreme Master of Magic, a 1950s refrigerated Coca-Cola vending machine and a Williams Manufacturing Company, Chicago, Ill., “Deluxe Pinch-Hitter” two-player coin-operated batting and pitching pinball machine. Black Forest carvings include a twig carved bench with rampant bear, a carved hall tree with bear and cubs, animal-form musical crop and coat hooks, ink and smoking stands, clocks, boxes and carved trays and bowls. Other decorative items will include a collection of tea caddies, silver and silverware, brass and copper cookware, table lamps, cast iron doorstops and a selection of spool cabinets.
Attention then turns to the horological items, tools and reference books. Featured will be two collections of hard-to-find reference books on horology, mechanical music and automata. Wristwatches will include an Omega ref. 105.004 “Seamaster” wrist chronograph with box, a white gold Patek Philippe ref. 3468/5 Calatrava, a Dodane large font type 21 military wrist chronograph with flyback function and others by Hamilton, Jules Jurgensen, Seiko and others, many in gold cases.
Pocket watch offerings will include an L. Leroy & Cie, Paris, gold pocket chronograph with first-class rating from the Besancon observatory, a G.H. & C. Gowland, Sunderland free-sprung gold pocket watch with wind indicator, a Patek Philippe 18K man’s dress watch and many other American and European examples, many in gold cases.
The sale will conclude with a wide variety of American and European clocks, sold individually and in multiple lots. European highlights include a Twentieth Century timepiece with orrery by Roland Jarvis, Hastings, a Nineteenth Century crystal regulator with Limoges enamel panels signed Lamy, a rare Empire-style swinging mystery clock signed Hippolyte Azur, Paris, an Eighteenth Century turtle shell veneered musical clock signed S. Rimbault, a collection of Black Forest hanging and shelf cuckoos, rare Lenzkirch clocks and more.
American offerings include many unusual tall clocks and standing jewelers regulators, including a mid-Nineteenth Century Gothic cased American astronomical regulator signed J. Gemmel, New York, a late Eighteenth Century tall clock with automata by Frederick Maus, Philadelphia, a D.H. Solliday, Philadelphia, mahogany tall clock and an unusual Delaware tall clock by George Crow Jr of Wilmington. Other American clocks include a Timothy Chandler, Concord, N.H., hanging lyre clock, a large number of Ansonia Royal Bonn porcelain clocks and Seth Thomas calendar clocks, as well as Ithaca, Howard and Chelsea clocks. A selection of horological tools and parts are also included in this sale.
