BLOCK’S MARBLE AUCTIONS, LLC
TRUMBULL CONN. — Block’s Marble Auction will conduct its 1,124th auction on Saturday, November 13. This timed online auction features a number of rare and high-quality antique, vintage, contemporary and collectible marbles, as well as marble-related items. Included in this sale are a consignment of modern marbles by highly sought-after contemporary artists. Highlighted in this sale are works by Cathy Richardson, John Kobuki, Josh Simpson, Zach Jorgenson, David Salazar and a dozen other artists.
Among the most interesting and popular marbles in this sale are several examples from Gregg Pessman’s “Pigs at Play” series. Pessman is a pig farmer from Illinois, who, during the winter months in the first decade of the 2000s, fashioned clay spheres by hand, hand painted whimsical images of pigs engaging in various activities, and then glazed and fired them. He termed this series “Pigs at Play.” Included in this auction is an example of “The Roller Coaster” [2001] depicting pigs operating and riding on a roller coaster. Also in this auction is the rare “SuperPig” triptych [2010]. This is a set of three marbles from “Pigs at Play” depicting the opening line of the Adventures of the Superman: “Faster Than a Speeding Bullet,” “More Powerful Than a Locomotive” “Leaps Tall Buildings In a Single Bound.” Each marble has SuperPig engaging in the associated peril, and either defeating pig villains or saving pigs from peril. The “Pigs at Play” series were only produced in the first decade of the 2000s, and these whimsical works of art are now highly sought after by marble collectors.
The auction also includes a number of original marble boxes, including a complete Peltier Glass Company comic set and a rare Christensen Agate Company No. 25 box. There are also many individual marbles in the auction, including handmade Sulphides, Swirls, Onionskins and Lutzes, and various machine-made marbles, such as Oxbloods, National Line Rainbos, Comics and Sparklers.
Bidding for this auction is online only. Lots begin to close at the rate of two a minute at 7 pm EST on Saturday, November 13.
