LONE JACK, MO. — In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with philanthropy, civic leadership, giving and the arts. For instance, after collecting for more than 50 years, Morton and Estelle donated what has been called one of the nation’s finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City. Their initiative to bring the famous Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen giant “Shuttlecock” installation to the museum’s lawn was perhaps their most notable act of patronage, though they had hoped to do so anonymously.
These are just two examples from a 70-year legacy of giving and connoisseurship that looms as large as those two-ton “Badminton Birdies.” Now, even though many of their favorite items have been given or bequeathed, there are still more than 500 interesting lots from their lives as collectors to be sold at auction. This includes sterling silver headlined by a one-off Gorham Martelé Art Nouveau ewer, 21 inches high, followed closely by a large Paul Storr tureen and bolstered by more Gorham Martelé, along with works stamped Gorham Athenic, Tiffany, Shreve, Crump & Low, Porter Blanchard and Georg Jensen. Additional categories include fine and decorative arts, tribal arts, bronze and other sculpture, modern furniture and lighting, handwoven carpets, antiquities, jewelry, designer fashions and an outstanding library of books and reference material on art and Native American crafts.
On December 3-4, Soulis Auctions will sell from the Kansas City collection of the Soslands.
The gallery is at 529 W Lone Jack Lees Summit Road. For information, 816-697-3830 or www.dirksoulisauctions.com.
