HUDSON, N.Y. — Public Sale Auction House will stage a special two-day sale November 19-20, comprising a pair of themed collections relating to local history and place. “Hudson: Three Wards” features relics from the auction house’s neighborhood and adjacent wards within the town of Hudson. “Paper & Other Collections” celebrates our collective yearning to find and gather objects to form and identify our place. This includes items not originally produced in the area but gathered there by Public Sale’s local consignors, who have helped to make this small “river town” a destination for antique lovers across the country.
“Hudson: Three Wards” will offer a large selection of George Smith furniture, a large stone bust, a taxidermied bat display case and two farm tables. “Paper & Other Collections” includes a magician bank, a Franklin Pierce broadside from 1852 and more than a dozen original Oktoberfest poster art.
Items from the two auctions blend together in Public Sale’s showroom, which is open for in-person preview, 10 am to 5 pm November 13-19. Bidding begins at noon each day, Friday, and Saturday, November 19-20. The catalog is available for preview and convenient online bidding through the auction platforms www.liveauctioneers.com, www.invaluable.com and www.auctionzip.com.
A love of place is built into the ethos of Public Sale, founded by longtime antiques lovers Gabriel Constantine and Tarah Gay. “You can’t love antiques without loving something about the places where they were found,” said Constantine. “Part of what makes something unique is its connection to the place where it came from and the people who made it or used it. Context is important — more than simply a paper trail of an item’s provenance, a sense of place can become almost a spiritual quality that suffuses the objects we collect.” With an ongoing focus on this kind of quality, Public Sale is carving out its own unique place in the auction industry.
Public Sale’s auctions regularly feature pieces of local history from the city of Hudson or the larger Hudson Valley, from the Nineteenth Century ironworks, brewing and other industrial legacies stretching from Albany to Long Island, to relics from the heyday of Catskills resorts to furniture and architectural elements done in the rustic style known as “Adirondack.” The area is rich in history, right down to Public Sale’s own venue. The renovation of the auction house’s office and display space in Hudson was completed in 2020 with an eye to the building’s original function as a Cadillac car dealership. Public Sale further honored the site’s history by including in its inaugural auction the giant display sign of the Chinese buffet restaurant that had advertised the building’s previous incarnation.
The forthcoming auctions will be held online only, with no in-person bidding available. Absentee bids, phone bids and internet bidding will be available. As many absentee and phone bids as necessary can be arranged.
Public Sale Auction House is at 90 Green Street. For information, www.public-sale.com, auction@public-sale.com or 518-966-7253.
