SARASOTA, FLA. — Andrew Ford, auctioneer and owner of Sarasota Estate Auction, will be formatting his December 11-12 sale as two sessions, each with its own personality. Session One on December 11 will offer a plethora of Modern and contemporary paintings, prints, sculpture from predominantly Twentieth Century artists and midcentury-style living décor from popular designers. Session Two on December 12 will feature more traditional art from recognized artists, including Ammi Phillips, James McNeil Whistler and jewelry, furnishings and more. Ford said he expects this could be the biggest sale of the year for his house with a total of more than 1,400 lots over the two sessions.
On December 11, the art will be from popular Twentieth Century artists. Session One features prints, paintings, sculpture and art from highly sought-after artists, such as Robert Rauschenberg with two pieces, Sam Francis with three works, Robert Motherwell with five pieces, Marc Chagall, Helen Frankenthaler with four pieces, David Hockney with five pieces, Joan Miro, Picasso with three signed and numbered and August Rodin. Saturday will also feature several collections of Venetian art glass and Steuben glass among the 600 lots to be offered.
December 12 will have a pair of Ammi Philips portraits to lead the sale. Phillips [1788-1865] was a prolific portrait painter born in Colebrook, Conn., but living most of his adult life in Dutchess County, N.Y., and Berkshire County, Mass. Today his work is regarded as the most important and popular of American folk art contributions. While more than 800 works have been attributed to him, only a handful were signed, with sales of his attributed works recently reaching as high as $1 million for “Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog.”
A recent addition to this sale is a Maurice Sendak painting that the artist gave to his friend and caretaker of his estate. The gift was a reward for lifetime service to Sendak and now will be publicly available for the first time. Sendak was very highly regarded as the illustrator of children’s books with his own version of animals, chubby horn-headed, jolly, upright characters, eventually writing his own books, including the popular Where the Wild Things Are. Recent sales of his work have set new records at more than $200,000 for single paintings.
More in Session Two will include a Tiffany shelf clock in gold gilt and bronze, signed on both the case and clockworks, and an etching by James McNeil Whistler of the noted sculptor C.L. Drouet. Antique and vintage silverware will include a Nineteenth Century coin silver tea service from Boston maker Davis and Brown; a large assortment of Nineteenth Century art, including several Hudson River School pieces. Completing the 800-lot session will be a large collection of Eastern European icons, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture, some from Maidstone Arms in East Hampton, N.Y., antique Oriental rugs, more silver and jewelry.
