COPAKE, N.Y. — Copake Auction will conduct its 42nd Annual New Year’s Day sale on Saturday, January 1, at 10 am. Previews will be December 27-31, 10 am to 4 pm daily. This sale will feature 750 lots and will be online only.
This sale will feature items from the Carolyn and Myron Neugeboren collection in Connecticut and various handpicked items from estates gathered all year long by Copake Auction. This is the gallery’s best sale of the year and the firm gathers material all year in anticipation of the sale.
According to Mike Fallon, this is Session I of the Neugeboren collection. The gallery picked 150 lots from the extensive collection of more than 1,000 lots that the gallery has in storage. The remaining items will be included in sales throughout 2022. The Neugeboren collection is mainly focused on folk art, period furniture, textiles, baskets, period accessories and more.
The main focus of their extensive collection is masterful contemporary folk art. Fallon said he was blown away at the magnitude and quality of the collection. The couple had a keen eye for modern folk art and collected some of the best artists in that genre, including names such as Gil Russell, Larry Koosed, Don Cadoret, Bruce Murphy, Walter and June Gotshall, Barbara Strawser, Gina Hosfeld, Bill and Phyllis Duffy, William Kautz and others.
Mike and Seth Fallon are both voracious folk art collectors, so they said they were thrilled to get this collection.
According to Seth Fallon, the Neugeborens were longtime customers of the gallery. The family consigned the collection to the gallery as the parents have both since passed. This well-known collection has been written about in Yankee Magazine and the Litchfield County Times. Period furniture from this collection will include an Eighteenth Century Newport, R.I., slant lid desk purchased from Nathan Liverant, an Eighteenth Century Pennsylvania highboy, Eighteenth Century fan-carved Newtown, Conn., highboy, made by E. Boot and purchased from T&R Brown Antiques American Antiques in Pennsylvania. Nineteenth Century cupboards, candlestands, custom tiger maple furniture, including a Moses Bayley tiger maple highboy, custom tiger maple dining table and Baker sideboard will cross the block. Also selling from this collection are Shaker boxes and primitives.
Also featured in this auction is a collection of portraits from the Richard Gottlieb estate, including a pair of Ammi Phillips portraits of Moriah Bronson and Theron Bronson, a portrait of Susanne Tillinghast of Connecticut attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field, a portrait of mother and child attributed to Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919), a portrait of David R. Arnell MD (1770-1826) by Ammi Phillips, a pair of portraits by William Matthew Prior of Otis and Margaret Kimball and more. This auction will feature more than 60 portraits and 150 pieces of artwork.
Other highlights in the sale include an untouched New York City classical secretary abbatant, a selection of period furniture, including sideboards, highboys, set of chairs, early seating, tavern and dining tables, lowboys, early Continental furniture and furnishings and more. A Boston mahogany kneehole desk stamped “A.L. Gates” will be sold as well as two pieces of Connecticut furniture stamped “Adams” and a mahogany chest of drawers stamped Robins & Winship.
An item of interest is a Paul Roman cabin trunk, collection of hooked rugs and samplers, weathervanes, period mirrors, period lighting, metalware, primitives and more. Some scarce baseball tintypes will be offered as well as political material, such as an extensive archive that includes autographs. Decorated stoneware will be included as well as delft chargers, Asian ceramics, Oriental rugs and more.
