Showplace in New York continues the Winter 2022 auction season with an exciting grouping of 280 lots from New York City Metropolitan area estates on February 6. The sale includes fine art, jewelry, silver, from New York City estates along with an exciting collection of James Mont furniture from an Upper East Side residence furnished by Mont.
The sale is centered around a spectacular collection of mid-century furniture designed by James Mont. Mont was among the most iconic designers of his era blending the styles of Asia with mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency design.
The section opens with a James Mont Asian Mid-Century Modern ebonized long chest of drawers with peach lacquer elements in the Chinese taste. Next is a James Mont mid-century modern ebonized wood four poster bed with Chinese carved hardwood and parcel gilt panels. Also featured are a pair of 1960s James Mont peach lacquered bedside dresser tables, with a central drawer over a pair of cupboard doors. Next is a vintage button-tufted 1960s James Mont club chair with navy velvet upholstery. It is followed by a stunning James Mont ebonized and parcel gilt wall-mounted vanity table with three-part mirror, in the Chinese Modern taste, branded ‘James Mont Design’ in the interior of the drawer. It is followed by two lots of two James Mont mid-century stained walnut and faux snakeskin-upholstered oxbow armchairs. Next in the collection is a James monumental cream-painted chest of drawers in the Chinese Modern taste followed by a dramatic set of five James Mont cut-out wood painted wall panels also in the Chinese modern style. Also of note is a 1960s James Mont tall-back button-tufted slipper chair upholstered in black velour. The sale also includes mid-century modern furnishings by Plycraft, George Nelson, Herman Miller, Russell Woodward, Westnova and Hvidt & Molgaard-Nielsen.
Lighting highlights include a 1970s Sciolari Italian Mid-Century Modern ‘Cubic’ chromed metal chandelier pendant light and a Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Co chinoiserie table lamp, bronze with slag glass shade.
Featured Asian arts include a pair of late 19th century pair of Chinese porcelain famille verte lidded jars, depicting court officials at leisure, decorated with handles in forms of bats. Next is a gilt bronze Thai standing Buddha in abhaya mudra, striding with left foot forward. Also of interest is a Southeast Asian carved stone stele sculpture or fragmentary architectural element, depicting Shiva and Parvati as Uma-Maheshvara, a couple with crowns and jewels, seated among a mandorla, possibly Indian, mounted on wooden pedes. The section highlights end with a Southeast Asian gilt bronze Buddha head depicted with ushnisha and elongated earlobes, mounted on a wood base.
Fine art highlights include a ‘Plate 1 from Album 19’ a 1961 abstract color lithograph by Joan Miro numbered 30 from an edition of 75. Also of note are works by Ethel Magafan, Jenne Magafan, and Arnold Geissbuhler.
Decorative arts highlights include a secessionist brass candelabra with a central star decoration and a pair of Italian modern horn and metal decorative fish sculptures by Hauy Pouigo.
February 6 will feature an extensive collection of fine jewelry and luxury goods including pieces by Tiffany and Cartier. Highlights include a modern palladium diamond heart brooch set with 22 diamonds (approx: 2 carats) and an Art deco handcrafted mixed-cut platinum diamond filigree eternity ring, set with 18 graduating cushion and baguette-cut diamonds (approx: 2.60 carats). Next are a pair of vintage 18K yellow gold diamond and white enamel clip earrings, pave set with 34 round brilliant-cut diamonds and a vintage 1970’s 14K yellow gold ruby and diamond ring, set with three mixed-cut oval rubies (faceted and cabochon-cut). The sale also includes a collection of limited edition luxury Montblanc and Omas pens along with costume jewelry by Alexis Bittar, Vilaiwan and Lawrence Vrba.
Silver seekers will find a Royal Danish International sterling silver flatware service for 12 (approx 125.92 ozt) including a Neoclassical style box. Also featured are a set of four Georgian sterling silver candlesticks in shape of Corinthian columns with stag motif (approx 60.09 ozt) and a Tiffany & Co English sterling silver tea set, including teapot, creamer and sugar pot, dated 1912 (44.49 ozt).
