ROCKLAND, MASS. — The 2022 New Year auction calendar for Willis Henry Auctions will start January 15 at the DoubleTree by Hilton with a collection from the Belknap family of Newburyport, Mass., and New Hampshire. Having moved to smaller quarters, one of the last remaining members of the family has chosen Willis Henry Auctions to bring to auction many pieces of early Chinese and Japanese Export porcelain, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century silver, family portraits and paintings of coastal New England, including ship portraits and seascapes.
Another collection of Americana represented is from Maryland and formed over 50 years, including pieces purchased from Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Withington Auctions, etc., and will include weathervanes, Eighteenth Century New England furniture, including tall chests, a red tavern table, early corner chair, wing chair, and oil paintings, as well as a rather unique hanging barber sign with three sections in traditional red, white and blue colors.
European paintings and watercolors include a framed after battle scene of Napoleon at Austerlitz and two detailed 1830 watercolors of street scenes in Berlin, one depicting the Palace of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. Also from a North Shore collection come two Nineteenth Century steamer trunks, both labeled “Louis Vuitton,” Paris and London.
An ephemera collection is represented with a 1782 Revolutionary War major’s suicide letter, originally found in papers from General Benjamin Lincoln of Hingham, Mass. There were three copies that Major Galvin wrote to friends and one copy is in the Philadelphia Historical Society. Another rare group of documents include bills of lading for shipping gold dust from Sacramento City, Calif., to Salem, Mass., in 1849/50. Also to coincide with the stoneware collection is a framed bill with illustrations of decorative crocks and jugs from the Bennington, Vt., factory.
Along with American and European paintings is a French oil on canvas attributed to Fernand Leger, signed and dated (1921?). The verbal provenance from the estate is included with the painting. Three young female students traveled to Paris in early 1930 and met Leger at his studio. One of them returned with the painting “Man w/Dog” and her daughter inherited it. It was consigned from that New York City estate to Willis Henry Auctions.
The auction is open to the public with a preview on Friday, January 14, from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday morning from 9 to 10:45 am, with the auction starting at 11 am.
