BRIMFIELD, MASS. — Love is in the air at Brimfield Antique Shows Events and Auctions as the firm prepares to present a one-owner collection of valentine cards in an online sale, Sunday, January 23, at 7 pm Eastern time.
The collection, which belongs to Agnes McDonald of New Hampshire, was lovingly collected over the course of several decades. McDonald’s interest in the cards began when she took a class in decoupage and wanted to use authentic Victorian paper to make her designs. She began buying cards everywhere she could find them. Her intention was to cut them up to use in her designs, but she found the intact cards to be so beautiful she could not bring herself to cut them up. Thus, began her decades-long collecting.
The auction will feature approximately 250 lots of ornate and rare valentines. Included in the collection are multi-layer German die-cut, fold-out cards, many with the honeycomb still intact, as well as cards by Raphael Tuck & Sons. Being paper and delicate at that, most of these cards did not survive, and when they are found, they are usually missing pieces, creased or torn. “The detail and condition of these cards is absolutely mind-blowing. Rarely do you find cards in this kind of condition and so many in one place,” stated Klia Ververidis, the firm’s chief executive officer and senior auctioneer.
The auction will be conducted online only on LiveAuctioneers. Pre-bidding is now open or bid live online beginning at 7 pm on January 23. Phone bids and absentee bids are available by calling 781-324-4400. More information is available at www.brimfieldlive.com

Offering at auction with no reserves, the museum quality antique Valentine’s Day card collection of Agnes McDonald.
Ms. McDonald began her collection when she started purchasing antique cards for decoupage but found some of the cards to be so beautiful and in such excellent condition that she didn’t have the heart to cut them up. Thus began a lifetime of collection. Now in her nineties, she would like to see these cards go to other collectors who will cherish them as much as she did.
