Case Antiques Two-Day Fine Art & Antiques Auction
January 29 & 30
Knoxville, TN –
COMPLETE CATALOG: www.caseantiques.com
KNOXVILLE, TENN. — The forecast is for plenty of ice — as in diamonds — at the winter Case antiques auction. Jewelry from estate collections headlines the January 29-30 sale, along with a rare C.M. Russell western bronze, midcentury furniture by Paul Evans and Knoll and silver by Georg Jensen and Paul Storr. The 1,172-lot auction also features American and European paintings, Southern decorative arts, historical items and Asian antiques.
There are more than 150 lots of jewelry and watches, much of it from the estates of three prominent women: healthcare executive Nicole Maslanka of Atlanta, a private Nashville philanthropist and late antique jewelry dealer Virginia Jared of Hillsboro, Tenn. Featured are two rings with GIA certified 4-carat diamonds: a square cut solitaire and a modified brilliant cut stone in platinum setting accented by princess cut and baguette diamonds (adding an additional 1.68 carats). Other highlights include a 3.79-carat old European cut diamond in platinum ring setting; a 2.42-carat diamond pendant, a platinum “tennis” necklace with baguette diamonds, totaling nearly 20 carats; an 18K sapphire and diamond bracelet; and an eternity band encircled with emerald cut diamonds weighing 7.19 total carats. Designer jewelry includes an 18K Cartier Le Baiser Du dragon diamond and ruby ring plus bracelets and necklaces by Tiffany, Omega and Michelleto. Among the timepieces are an 18K and diamond Cartier watch, a Cartier Panthere bracelet watch, a Tiffany 18K split second chronograph pocket watch, a 1906 Vacheron & Constantin Milan Grand Prix 15K pocket watch and a collection of railroad related pocket watches.
A 1929 bronze casting of Charles Marion Russell’s “Smoking with the Spirit of the Buffalo” highlights the art offerings. It is one of two known castings commissioned by Russell’s widow from the California Art Bronze Foundry three years after the sculptor’s death. It was acquired directly from Mrs Russell by a Detroit tycoon and descended in his family to the present estate. Other bronze sculpture includes a figure of Abraham Lincoln by George Bissell; a fountain, “Duck Mother,” by Edward Berge; and “Consolation” by Hippolyte Moreau.
“Daughter of the South” by Frank E. Schoonover, depicting a woman wielding a revolver to fend off a mob advancing on her porch, leads the paintings category. The oil on canvas was used as an illustration for a story of the same name, published in The Century Illustrated in 1910 and is included in the Schoonover catalogue raisonné. Also commanding attention are two monumental Eighteenth Century mythological oils on canvas depicting Hercules departing for and returning from war. The paintings, both measuring nearly 8 feet tall and recently removed from the entry of a Nashville mansion, are attributed to the circle of Jean Francois Lagrenee, but were previously attributed to German painter Anton Raphael Mengs.
Southern art includes a pastel portrait of an African American flower seller by Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, a large Appalachian mountain landscape by Rudolph Ingerle and a Maryland farm scene by Charles Fleischmann.
Looming large among the works by Outsider and African American artists is a monumental, 81-by-33-inch double sided painting by Kentucky artist Helen LaFrance. It depicts African animals at a watering hole on one side and a Kentucky horse and rider on the reverse. It is one of five works in the auction by LaFrance, including church picnic and river baptism scenes and three portraits (one of them a possible self-portrait by LaFrance).
Leading the furniture offerings is a 1970s Paul Evans “Cityscape” console constructed in burlwood and brass. It displays nicely with two Pierre Paulin ABCD sofas by Artifort, and a collection of Knoll furniture.
Silver collectors will find many temptations, including a Georg Jensen “No. 3” eight-piece tea and coffee service dating circa 1920, and a pair of crested Paul Storr silver platters measuring 13-3/4” diameter. A set of four Tiffany sterling nesting trays is on the menu, along with an elaborate Viennese gilt silver, enamel and crystal casket and several German silver knight figures.
Headlining the historical category is a Tiffany sword, belt and commendation presented to Union Admiral Cadwalader Ringgold for his role in rescuing 400 Maryland Marines from a sinking ship off the coast of South Carolina in 1861. There is also an important Confederate LeMat revolver, a rare Kentucky “call to arms” broadside and a Rhode Island kepi hat, along with an archive containing graphic CDVs from Civil War Hospital No. 1 in Nashville, Tenn., and an archive of Civil War letters from a POW at Johnson’s Island.
The Asian arts category features a selection of textiles including a Qing dynasty embroidered pink or apricot silk court robe in shadowbox frame; a black lacquer incense stand or altar table with polychrome landscape; and an elaborate carved jade temple lion on silver inlaid stand.
There is a significant amount of Chinese export porcelain, including a rare Revolutionary War-era Arms of Liberty punch bowl and a pair of Kangxi Imari-style plates made for the French market, with arms for the Corbeau family.
The live auction begins Saturday, January 29, at 9 am and Sunday, January 30, at 1 pm. Live bidding is by reservation; online, absentee and phone bids will also be accepted. Persons wishing to preview the auction may do so by making prior reservations on the company’s website through Friday, January 28. Case’s gallery is at 4310 Papermill Drive.
