HUDSON, N.Y. — On February 5, Public Sale Auction House will conduct its first Midcentury Modern auction of 2022, titled “Modern Blueprint” and described as “Cementing our love of modern classics with a nod to the functionality and utility of modern designs.”
The sale is a who’s who of modern designers, from midcentury to postmodern, and from the classics like Eames & Nelson to more contemporary picks like Phillipe Starck. It represents an accumulation of items from several estates, including that of artist Cary Leibowitz.
The Leibowitz estate includes a number of remarkable pieces of furniture that were purchased new and never left his Copake, N.Y., lake house, including two DeSede sofas and a few other iconic pieces from well-known designers, such as Bertoia, Platner, Eames and more.
A West Hurley, N.Y., estate full of modern furniture will also be auctioned. The estate’s owner was a self-proclaimed “collector of chairs,” and the house contained contemporary pieces classics, and even an extensive archive of Domus magazines.
The final estate that will be included is a local (to Public Sale) library of books and prints from the collection of filmmaker and artist Sedat Pakay. Pakay was a student of the prominent photographer Walker Evans. The library contained signed books from James Baldwin, the gallery show programs of Josef Albers and more. Sedat also had a close relationship with Tyler Graphics, from whom Public Sale has gathered a large collection of gallery posters.
The sale has a well-rounded selection of furniture, lighting and art. Highlights include a George Nelson bedroom set from its original home, an original Paavo Tynell lighting fixture and a large “Cow” print after Andy Warhol.
The sale will be online at noon on February 5 and will have an in-person preview that will be open from January 29 to February 5, 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, www.public-sale.com or 518-966-7253.
