NEW YORK CITY — David Killen Gallery is preparing to sell the collection of the late Dr David Y. Solomon of New York City, a heart surgeon and avid collector of rare French, Middle Eastern and African antiques, who passed away at age 92 in December 2015. On offer will be fine art, antiquities and furniture from his New York City residence.
Part I of the sale will be February 13; Part II will be February 27.
Highlights include a rare watercolor by Kurt Schmidt Rottluff; a self-portrait etching or drawing by Oscar Kokoschka; a lot of French, African and Middle Eastern antiques; a Roman marble carving of a lamb, 14 inches long and 4 inches wide; Chinese furniture and much more.
The Rottluff piece measures 9 by 13 inches and is signed “S Rottluff” in the upper right corner. The Kokoschka piece appears to be a self-portrait (possibly an early state of an unpublished work). There are some marks in addition to the etching in the face area that appear to be pencil or charcoal. It measures 5¾ by 8 inches with a 14½-by-12¾-inch frame and is signed OK in pencil or charcoal under the mat.
Among the African art highlights is a wooden sculpture of a boy fighting a leopard, 38 inches tall. Its origin is unknown, but it is possibly from Benin in Nigeria. Other pieces in the auction include a large Edo head from Benin (Nigeria), a large painted Yoruba Epa helmet mask (likely depicting Olomoyeye, mother of children), a large equestrian wood sculpture from the Dogon peoples, as well as many other small pieces in wood and bronze.
