GENESEO, N.Y. — Fine art and antiques will cross the block at Cottone Auctions on March 19 at noon EST. The sale will include more than 275 lots and feature the collections of the estate of Elizabeth Strasenburgh, Rochester, N.Y., Randy and Bette Swift, Fernandina Beach, Fla., the David K. Anderson Grandchildren’s Trust, Buffalo, N.Y., various Upstate New York museums and institutions, as well as items from various estates and individuals
Works on offer include a rare, early carved ebony sculpture by Alexander Calder (1898-1976), “Femme Assise,” circa 1928, measuring 16½ inches ($30/50,000). This was previously published and illustrated in Edouard Raymond, Paris Montparnasse, Sandy Calder ou le Fil de Ser Devient Statue, June 15, 1929, pg. 39.
Upon arrival in 1926, in the Montparnasse district of Paris, Calder met Picasso, Brancusi, Zadkine and Pascin. At that time, the young Calder sculpted the nude in wood, a material that he borrowed from several of his artist friends such as Brancusi (1914-1917) or Zadkine (1912-1914).
A rare oak hall chair by Charles Rohlfs (1853-1936) from the estate of Jane Wolcott Steinhausen of Rochester will be offered. The chair has unusual carved feet, signed with the artist monogram and dated 1901, measuring a height of 58 inches ($50/80,000).
Twentieth Century highlights from the estate of Elizabeth Strasenburgh include a watercolor by Raoul Dufy (French, 1877-1953), “Les Bateau à Voile,” 19-5/8 by 25-3/8 inches ($30/50,000) and an oil painting by Max Weber (American, 1881-1961), who was a personal friend of Strasenburgh ($15/25,000). Other standouts include a stainless steel kinetic sculpture by George Rickey (1907-2002), titled “Four W’s.” Standing at more than 8 feet with a rotating diameter of 5 feet 6 inches., dated 1986-93, it is the third of an edition of three. The kinetic sculpture was acquired directly from the artist in 1994 and has remained in the family of the original owners ($50/80,000). Several works by Wendell Castle (1932-2018), an American furniture artist and a leading figure in American craft, will also be offered.
There will be many lamps by Tiffany Studios, including a Peony table lamp with an 18-inch shade ($60/80,000); a Bamboo table lamp with a 16-inch shade ($40/60,000); and a Red Poppy table lamp with a 20-inch shade ($50/80,000). Also offered is a rare Duffner & Kimberly Henry II table lamp and Adam lamp.
More than 30 lots of estate jewelry, including a 9-carat pear shaped diamond ring ($100/150,000) will come up for bid, as well as watches by Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe.
Paintings will feature a Robert Henri (American, 1865-1929) titled “La Closerie des Lilas,” oil on wood panel, 4 by 6 inches ($8/12,000). A rare oil painting by Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (Spanish, 1863-1923) titled “Playa de Valencia.” It was likely painted in 1904, the summer in which Sorolla spent painting on the El Cabanal beach in Valencia. Here he produced numerous small-scale beach scenes, painted on the spot. The work was published and exhibited by the Hispanic Society of America in 1909 ($20/40,000). A Rubens Santoro (Italian, 1859-1942) oil on canvas of Capri, 9½ by 15 inches ($8/12,000), “Morning Glory” by Jules Joseph LeFebvre (French, 1826-1911) oil on canvas 50 by 33½ inches ($25/50,000) are additional fine art highlights.
In Americana, there is a large, early carved and painted architectural eagle with traces of original paint and gilding, measuring 72 inches long, from a Cortland, N.Y., estate ($7/10,000). A Nineteenth Century painted portrait of George Washington, modeled after Gilbert Stuart, 30 by 24 inches ($5/8,000), and a painting by William Aiken Walker (American, 1838-1921) of a family of cotton pickers, measuring 12¼ by 9¼ inches ($10/15,000) round out the highlights.
