WILLISTON, VT. – Merrill’s Auctioneers and Appraiser is offering 600 lots of sports memorabilia, art, Adirondack items, firearms, swords and knives, Native American material, decoys and more on Friday, February 25.
Of special note is a 1775 Revolutionary War powder horn with patriotic verse “By Your Side A Friend I’ll Be While You Fight For Liberty.” Belonging to Timothy Cooper Ward (1739-1816), a lieutenant in the New Jersey Militia. The verse is found in an 1886 short story, “The River Floweth,” published in Harpers New Monthly Magazine, which describes the powder horn hanging from a portrait of the Revolutionary War veteran. Sold with copies of letters and family research the 13-inch horn is estimated $10/20,000.
Collectors of historical Americana will also appreciate a 1788 John Hancock signed ship register for the schooner Nancy, which was owned by Hugh Hill (1740-1829), a first cousin of Andrew Jackson and a privateer out of Beverly, Mass. It bears a large, clear John Hancock signature. The Colonial Society of Massachusetts has published an article on the “Privateers of Beverly” describing Hugh Hill in detail ($8/12,000).
Native American material will also be offered, including a Navajo third phase chief’s blanket, circa 1875, with indigo blue, cochineal bayette ravel and brown dye. It measures 4 feet 6 inches by 5 feet 5 inches ($15/25,000).
Catching collectors’ attention is an early Twentieth Century Northwest Coast totem, polychrome paint on wood, probably Haida, initialed T.F. and signed in syllabic on reverse, 24½ inches high ($2/4,000).
Offerings of Western art include a bold pen and ink drawing of a cowboy with his horse by Edward Borein (1873-1945), mounted on a period letter board dated July 19, 1914, Sheridan Wyo., 12 by 9 inches ($6/8,000).
