BEDFORD, N.Y. — Hundreds of lots from New York and Connecticut estates will cross the block at Butterscotch Auction on March 20. Highlighting the selection of fine art are three paintings from the same Bedford, N.Y., estate: a mountainous landscape oil on canvas by Charles Partridge Adams (1852-19492), an extensive townscape painting by Paul Starrett Sample (1896-1974) and an oil on board by Isabel (Wolff) Bishop (1902-1988) of subway strap hangers — plus several pen and ink drawings by Bishop.
Old Master drawings and paintings from a New Canaan, Conn., collector will also be offered, including works by Giambattista Gigola, Simone Cantarini, plus works attributed to Jean-Honore Fragonard, Jacques-Louis David and others.
From the Stamford, Conn., homestead of a longtime collector of autograph, musical manuscripts and ephemera, a rare consignment is headlined by a Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) autograph manuscript (a quotation from the Orchestral Suite No. 3) in addition to manuscripts from the hands of Hector Berlioz, Louis Theodore Gouvy, Charles Gounod, Johann Strauss II and Giacomo Puccini, among others.
From this musical estate also comes a rare 29-piece Ambrosius Lamm opera set hand painted with various scenes, circa 1930. Other decorative selections in the sale include two KPM plaques (one signed “Wagner”), a pair of Federal eagle gilt wall sconces, a large patinated zinc American eagle, several whirligigs, articulated sculptor’s models, tea caddies, Eighteenth Century brass and many rare and collectible clocks, including a Simon Willard banjo clock (circa 1805-08). Another highlight is a Tiffany stained glass table lamp in Pomegranate pattern.
A selection of sterling silver will be auctioned, including a rare, ornately sculpted Tiffany & Co. tea and coffee set, and several Georgian pieces, most notably a silver rattle with a coral handle, circa 1754. Jewelry is also in abundance, offerings underlined by a pair of Cartier train-form cufflinks and a Van Cleef & Arpels brooch; plus, several 1.0-plus-carat diamonds set in rings, bracelets and pins.
Many furnishings are also cause for excitement, including a Herts Brothers inlaid rosewood cabinet, a pair of Neoclassical inlaid penwork display cabinets, a Philadelphia tea table, an Eighteenth Century New England round hutch table, a Federal inlaid mahogany sideboard, a Queen Anne curly maple lowboy, a set of D.R. Dimes Windsor chairs and more.
Asian arts (porcelain, paintings and furniture), rugs and carpets, bronze sculpture, Midcentury Modern furniture (including Gunni Omann, Ward Bennett, Jean Prouve and Pace), firearms, Audubon and Currier & Ives engravings, and more will be featured in this auction.
This auction will be at the Bedford Historical Hall, 608 Old Post Road, beginning at 10:30 am EST, with live, online and phone bidding. For more information, 914-764-4609, 914-595-6749 or www.butterscotchauction.com
