PLAINVILLE, CONN. — The auction catalog will be available from March 4 online at www.auctionsappraisers.com for Winter Associates’ auction on March 14 starting at 5:30 pm.
From shoreline and central Connecticut estates, the firm Winter will offer a diverse selection of Midcentury Modern (MC) furnishings, Twentieth Century decorative arts, including a 17-piece Tiffany Zodiac desk set, early Moorcroft and Pilkington pottery, as well as a single-owner collection of American Southwestern jewelry, antiques and Eldred Wheeler and other furnishings, as well as an assortment of Asian furniture, prints and ceramics.
An MCM Arne Vodder for Sibast rosewood dining room suite from a Newington estate includes dining table and chairs, sideboard and glass front cabinets. Originally an architect, Vodder’s timeless Danish designs enjoyed great international success, and in the 1950s and 1960s could be found in Jimmy Carter’s White House as well as at the Vatican under Pope Paul VI’s appreciative eye. At home with a blend of Asian and modern, also in the sale are a streamlined Asian motif living room set with sofa, loveseat, chair and folding screen and a classic MC bedroom set of rosewood. Also of note, a modern Diamond pattern tea set by Reed and Barton presents a sleek profile and is featured among 17 other lots of silver.
On the more traditional side there are some antiques such as an American Federal chest with tiger maple and a Dutch marquetry chair. Several pieces from notable makers Eldred Wheeler and Warren Chair Works, two Federal-style banquet tables, including one by Harden, and an abundance of Chippendale and Queen Anne form dining chairs will complement the paintings offered.
Among American paintings to be auctioned is a selection of works by the Burr Sisters of Monroe, Conn. Talented artists and distant relations of Aaron Burr, third vice president, the sisters Fannie Coralis (1858-1931) and Jennie May (1872-1961) enjoyed an unusual artistic upbringing as the town’s most prominent citizens, both attending and graduating from Mount Holyoke College and the Yale School of Fine Arts, as well as becoming members of the New York Arts Students League — all rare accomplishments for women at that time. A variety of their works offered in the sale will include oil paintings and drawings in graphite and charcoal. Also headed across the block are a group of Nineteenth Century portraits and a George Mears marine scene from a single owner.
Artworks from the estate of a Connecticut collector are an eclectic group of modern sensibility, including some in the manner of Alice Neel, whose works often portrayed her passion for the beauty of subjects not traditionally considered so.
A single-owner estate selection of more than 90 pieces of American Native Southwestern jewelry features belt buckles, hat bands and numerous bracelets and rings, etc. Some of these large and impressive designs may have been “Old Pawn.” This term originates from its use as currency, as Native Americans had no access to cash or banks on reservations and jewelry became a form of portable wealth. Among the assortment to be offered is a variety of silver set with semiprecious stones turquoise, sodalite, onyx, lapis and coral in chunky cuff bracelets, rings and earrings, many styles with universal appeal.
An unusually large 17-piece Tiffany Zodiac desk set will be an offering, along with 11 pieces of Moorcroft and Pilkington English pottery. Sought after by collectors, Pilkington’s “Lancastrian” glaze was developed in 1903, resulting in a signature iridescent finish that was named after the county of Lancashire, England, where the factory was sited. King George V and Queen Mary became admirers of Pilkington wares while visiting a nearby home in 1913 and subsequently granted the company a royal warrant, changing the firm’s name to Pilkington’s Royal Lancastrian Pottery Company.
Previews are Friday, March 11, from noon to 4 pm; Sunday, March 13, from 2 to 4 pm; and on Monday, March 14, from Noon to 5 pm. Previewers are welcome at other times and should call to schedule an appointment.
