BUFORD, GA. — Slotin Auction, an auction house specializing in self-taught art for the last 30 years, will bring examples of the genre to the auction block this April as well as highlighting a collection of Native American art, objects and pottery, antique folk art and Americana and a display of African American and contemporary quilts.
With major museum shows, self-taught art is enjoying a well-deserved time in the spotlight. Slotin Auction offers a rare opportunity to collectors to acquire premier examples of artworks by self-taught artists that rival the best examples in these exhibitions. Related to the exhibition “Joseph E. Yoakum: What I Saw” on display at MoMA are two examples in Slotin’s spring Masterpiece sale. Related to “Gatecrashers: The Rise of the Self-Taught Artist in America” is a monumental example by Lawrence Lebduska, “The Civilize Jungle,” 41 by 31 inches. And related to the High Museum’s “Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe” are six examples highlighted in this sale.
In addition to self-taught art, Slotin Auction will also feature a collection of Native American art and objects, including vintage bead work, a pottery collection, weavings, baskets, kachinas, etc., some antique folk art and Americana, as well as African American quilts and 37 contemporary quilts from the Barbara and Robert Hunter collection.
