NEW YORK CITY — Showplace will present a modern sale of 280 lots from New York City metropolitan area estates on April 24. Offerings will include furniture by Paul McCobb, George Nakashima, Paul Evans and Fritz Hansen. Other highlights include a French articulated horse model, Louis Mendez sculptures, art and prints from Cindy Sherman, Salvador Dali, Daniele Donde, Robert Gwathmey and Umetaro Azechi. A wide array of silver, porcelain, glass, jewelry, paintings and more complete the sale.
Highlights include an African feather-clad burlap dance cape, likely from the Ivory Coast region, each feather is inverted and stitched to a repurposed burlap grain sack with an aperture for the head and arms. Next is a sculptural Lotus Arts de Vivre 18K yellow gold amethyst and Venetian glass beaded bib-style collar necklace, comprising 40 graduated oblong faceted-cut amethyst beads and approximately 87 gold tone Venetian glass beads; all capped with yellow gold ball ends on woven black cord necklace. The piece is accompanied by the original presentation box.
The sale continues with a collection of Midcentury Modern furniture. The section opens with a rare George Nakashima carved wooden stool. The piece has provenance from Louis Mendez, a friend of Nakashima. Next is a vintage Isamu Noguchi for Herman Miller coffee table with a patinated carved wood base. The table was acquired directly from Herman Miller and has had only one owner. The concavity along both finely hand sculpted axes of the base and original ribbon-edge green glass top distinguish this table from all later reproductions, including those manufactured by Herman Miller. Next is a Paul McCobb for Widdicomb Symmetric Group high back lounge chair with an ottoman, both with a walnut base and legs. Next is a pair of Paul McCobb for Widdicomb Symmetric Group slipper chairs with carved wood legs and upholstered seats. The section continues with a pair of Midcentury Modern andirons by Donald Deskey with a silver and copper-tone metal skyscraper motif. Next is a pair of modern George Nelson and Associates model H601 wrought iron andirons of “X” shape form.
Also included are an R&Y Augousti Paris modern shagreen dresser with a glass top, an Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen Midcentury Modern gray leather upholstered swan chair on a swivel chrome metal base and a Jeffrey Bernett for B&B Italia Modern Contemporary “Metropolitan” armchair in orange upholstery.
Featured lighting includes a Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte Italian Modern table lamp in white glass and a pair of large Vincent Garnier Paris opalescent tabletop torchieres/uplights, with glass shades and pewter bases, handmade in France.
Fine art highlights include a mixed media painting of Marilyn Monroe by Italian artist Daniele Donde. Next is a modern abstract oil on canvas by Irish painter Barrie Cooke. Sculpture showcased includes a collection of works by Louis Mendez, who was a friend of George Nakashima. The first work is a large ceramic pottery sculpture titled “The Two Sides of Eve,” depicting a nude female torso between two wheel-thrown towers with true-to-life hands and faces. It is followed by “Laurie,” a 1975 stoneware ceramic sculpture of a nude female figure.
Prints and multiples on offer include Cindy Sherman’s “Mask Over Baby Doll,” Salvador Dali’s “La Dernier Venu de la Dernier Planete” (The Latecomer from the Last Planet) and Jim Dine’s 1993 woodcut “Heart for Film Forum.” The sale also includes three silkscreens by Robert Gwathmey.
Decorative arts on offer include a French articulated hardwood equestrian horse artist’s mannequin model on a rectangular base with two adjustable rods, a Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda large modern studio art glass vase in orange with multicolored glass flecks near the neck and a French Elie Bleu orange sycamore humidor box with ebony and zebra wood inlay.
Silver seekers will find a George III sterling silver tea set comprising four pieces, one large lidded teapot, one small pot, a cream jug and a double-handled sugar pot from Samuel Hennell, London, decorated with scrolling foliate rims and scalloped bodies.
The sale also includes a collection of fine and costume jewelry along with a collection of vintage Montblanc pens.
All auctions can be previewed at Showplace 40 West 25th Street in Manhattan ten days prior to each sale and are all immediately available for online preview and bidding at www.nyshowplace.com. Showplace can be reached by telephone at 212-633-6063.
