NORTHFIELD, MASS. — On April 30, Northfield Auctions will present a diverse auction with estate items. A gentleman’s collection of Native Americana highlights the offerings with stone artifacts, textiles and pottery. That group is joined by 12 newly discovered paintings by Elie Lascaux with direct provenance, being from the collection of Donald C. Gallup, 30-year curator of Yale’s Beinecke Library. Gallup was introduced to Lascaux by Gertrude Stein and became a close friend and major collector of Lascaux’s work.
Lascaux has a most interesting life story. Besides being an artist himself, his social circle was rife with notable artists and writers of the times. Indeed, Paolo Picasso, son of Pablo and Olga, was godfather to Lascaux’s daughter Germaine. The Lascauxs and Picassos vacationed together, and were lifelong close friends. Lascaux’s work is found in many museums and institutions throughout the world. This is probably the largest grouping of Lascaux’s work still in private hands.
Rounding out the sale will be a Saarinen Tulip table, carved tables, R.S. Prussia items, sterling silver, militaria, early documents and jewelry.
