Across New England flowers are blooming; lettuce is being harvested and seedlings are ready for planting. At Connecticut River Book Auction, we’ve put together a sampling of history, fiction, fine printing, photography and more to please our customers.
Interested in Western history? If so, then we have several lots on the west including a first edition of Santleben’s (1910) “A Texas Pioneer” and a signed copy of Dobie’s (1955) “Tales of Old Time Texas.” For those interested in the Civil War, there is a 1st edition of Beach’s (1902) “The First New York (Lincoln) Cavalry from April 19, 1861 to July 7, 1865.” We also have a revised edition of “Our Hawaii Islands and Islanders,” with a letter laid in by Jack London’s wife reflecting on the book as, “a love story of a great man, a lovely country and its loving people.”
This auction is rich in fiction. Some of the offerings are: Dickens (1840, 1st ed.) “Master Humphery’s Clock,” in 3 volumes; Saroyan’s (1934, signed) “The Daring Young on the Flying Trapeze;” Kavanagh’s aka Julian Barnes (1980, signed) “Duffy;” Burke’s (1992, signed /limited) “The Bright and Shining Sun;” and not to be left out Jackson’s (1949, 1st book issue) “The Lottery.”
For those who appreciate fine press, listings include: Weil’s (1973) “The Iliad or The Poem of Force,” one of 150 copies published by The Stone Wall Press; Twain’s (1944) “Life on the Mississippi,” LEC signed byThomas Hart Benton in a clamshell case; Morris’ (1893) “Gothic Architecture A Lecture for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society,” limited edition published by Kelmscott Press, housed in a custom case; and Koch’s (1976) Buchstabenfreude The Delight of Letters A Collection of Quotations from the Works of Rudolf Koch,” 30 broadsides in a folder and slipcase.
There are several lots of photography but one of the most interesting involves boxer James Corbett posing in an open-air car. Then there is an inscribed copy of Farley’s (1969) “The Black Stallion,” and we would be most remiss if we did not mention that this auction offers an inscribed copy of “Profiles in Courage,” from John F. Kennedy to Henry Maier who happened to be the only other male in attendance at a 1959 Women’s Cleveland Book Club Luncheon that Kennedy attended.
